I'm not a flames fan but if I were I'd hope they offer two of those second rounders to Anaheim, Pitt, St.louis and Tampa and see if they can can get one of the goalies there as those teams all seem to have two starters.

Beggers will be choosers on the Russell trade. Had he not been traded, BT would have been ridiculed for not making a deal for a pending UFA. He made a deal and got some assets and a pick. Yes, it would have been nice to get that 1st rounder but its still a trade I think we have the upper hand on. Russell was an over achieving 2nd pairing guy under Hartley, he'd be realistically in the 3rd pairing under new management so it washes with JokiP...

Overall a 'meh'

That was plenty to get back for Russell. Dallas was ridiculed for a reason for possibly giving up a first and the other assets for him if it advanced further. He simply isn't worth that. He is moreso a decent, not great third D pairing guy

Russell was at a low before he left the team. Somehow we got a 2nd, a serviceable young 3rd pairing guy, and a B level prospect. AND we stole the trade right out of Benning's hand and made him look a fool for not getting Hamhius traded.

He played great for Dallas in the playoffs. Todd can analyze the 5v5 play all he wants. Russell's mobility came back for that run. He played a big part in them get as far as they did.

how could you possibly be bashing the return for Russell? They got a ridiculous amount for an average bottom pairing dman on an expiring contract. Dallas gave up way too much for such a garbage dman

Technically he bashed Russell then bashed the return we got for the player he doesn't like.

Yeo is very much a meh for me. Nothing spectacular in his track record... don't see him as much more than an incremental improvement.

If he's the best option of the experienced guys, I'd rather bring in someone new.

I completely agree with Bigern. When the news 1st broke that Russell was traded to DAL, were simply hoping for a 2nd or 3rd. We got a 2nd, and we got a bonafide NHL'r, albeit it a 3rd liner and a former 2nd round pick that put up decent, not great #'s in the WHL. Nothing to complain about, still very much a win for CGY.

RE: Yeo, I think he's an ok option. I believe MIN was his 1st go 'round and he did pretty good with a team make up similar to ours; a couple good vets and a ton of youth. Of course the vet presence is spread differently tan ours is. Im sure he's learned a few things from that experience. Not a bad choice IMO.

Agreed, Yeo wouldn't be the worst choice. A cycle-heavy coach would be interesting.

Umm no, you were handed that trade, as Canucks ownership likely put a stop to any trade with Gagliardi team, unless it was fair. The two ownership groups don't exactly like each other. Plus Dallas offered garbage, not worthy of a trade for Hamhuis. Do I like it, no, but that's business, and I'm sure Aquilini loved watching Dallas get beat last night.

To run a cycle game well you need a roster built for cycling though... The Flames don't have the bodies to play that way at this point.

I think that's why Bob had them playing a transition/rush based system. With undersized defense that move the puck well, and small shifty forwards that can make guys miss in open ice... it's the system that made sense for this roster.

The problem with Bob's system is that there didn't seem to be anything to it beyond the rush.

Looking at teams like Tampa and Chicago... they don't play a traditional cycle game. They play a highly mobile passing system that goes beyond strong board play. The players move constantly and open up lanes for each other.

Friedman was saying they had a similar offer tabled until the Russell trade went down. Following that, the Stars made an adjusted offer of a 3rd for Hamhuis.

Benning obviously didn't like working on a trade for a while, getting a decent looking return set up, then having it pulled. Makes sense he wouldn't take the 3rd on principle. 3rd round is still within the top 100 players in the draft though..

Did you support him not making the adjusted trade? Just curious. I've noticed plenty of Canuck fans on either side.

Yeah, return wasn't good enough. Almost like Jim Nill was screwing the trade on purpose, that's where the Aquilini/Gagliardi speculation comes into play.

I would have liked to make the trade, as you are right.... any prospect and draft pick has value, especially for the Canucks who still need to fill the cupboard, from our Gillis days.

Getting nothing on TDL day was not ideal.

Looking at the return in a vacuum, sure it isnt a marvelous haul

However, Calgary will likely parlay some of those assets, notably the additional 2nd for franchise improvement.

Either to move up in the draft to a higher position to get someone they really have their sights on OR to package in a trade to get a solid starting goalie.

Having three 2nd round picks really makes two of those picks expendable to get a real quality netminder, an obvious major need for the flames

no kidding...and they got him for next to nothing in the first place

The first round pick would have pushed the trade from great to amazeballs

Yeah I believe the general consensus on here was that it was a pretty decent return. I think some people suggested that he might get us a First rounder but I think that had to do more with the market then Russel's play.
