Plenty of Fortune 500 companies hire CEO who aren't great public speakers. That's why they have a PR staff and spokespeople that do all the talking for them. Most people, unless they're politicians and used to speaking in front of media/large gatherings of people AND don't have a script in front of them to read from generally aren't going to sound as intelligent as they might be otherwise.

In Jim Benning's case, let's not forget that the media here are idiots and expect definitive answers that they can then run and make their own commentary on ripping everything to shreds, losing the context or outright making poop up as they go along. It's hard to sit at that table and answer questions and try and give them something without tipping your hand enough to destroy your bargaining position and esteem and influence in the 'Old Boys' club that is the NHL GM fraternity.

I'm thinking of guys like Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, and Dean Kamen. People with no formal training in PR but can stand up and articulate what they want to accomplish because they know exactly what they want.

I'm not calling JB out because he has a funny voice. I'm calling him out because I'm not sure he knows what the plan is. That's why he can't articulate it.

Your bolded statement is spot on. Can't wait until the old guard fades away.

Someone should tell Stecher about Justin Schultz and how well that worked out for him.

Plan is to make the playoffs and get younger, start developing a new core. Sometimes the plan doesn't always work out as you expect, doesn't mean you stray from it.

I think we are so hockey focused that we forget these are businesses worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Mario wants to sell the penguins for $750M.

Can you imagine a billion $ company hiring a CEO who is not comfortable in front of a mic or on stage?

Hey, I had a boss who picked bellybutton lint out of his bellybutton in front of customers, what would 1040 make of that?

Vancouver is more like Edmonton than Pittsburgh, so take that into consideration on how you think he fits here...

I think that idea went out the window when JB traded a 5th for a different RHD in the oilers organization, Larsen. Man, I hope Larsen doesn't suck. I think it came down to whether or not JB wanted to give up a 3rd or 5th.

True, but again, articulate the change so your fan base (who pay the bills) aren't confused. It seems contradictory and disorganized. It only gives those idiots in the media more to write about and for us to female dog about.

To me it seems like Vancouver will support a club that is performing badly as long as there’s a vision in place. I'll use Burkie as an example. Inherited a god awful team, stated his vision clearly, backed up his words, and fans took notice and started shelling out the money even though they weren't winning on the ice.

Right now, fans are leaving in droves because they have no idea what's going on.

I’ll give JB some time to get experienced but if his work up to now is any indication of the future, I ain’t impressed.

Maybe this is stretching things a bit, but, San Jose does have a former Vancouver prospect in their organization.

Patrick McNally - with AHL SJ Barracuda - 35 games, 1 goal, 2 assists

People screamed blue murder when Benning ditched him for a 7th round pick (Tate Olson: 9g, 35a in 65 games with PG Cougars)

Thx much Carol and for all your efforts over the season...you are one of the best on here.

My prediction from the last thread Carol I will challenge you on STL and SJ...

"I like Lou but he will choke FLA out. Plus I can't cheer for a Bettman warm market franchise that has no business being in the NHL.

Cheering for STL in the west and Philly in the East. Philly won't beat WAS but hopefully will give them a run.

SJ-STL-ANA-DAL move on in the west

TB-FLA-WAS-PIT move on in the East.

CHI to me looks vulnerable playing some poor hockey of late and sporatic injuries.

I don't like LA to move on without the clutch scoring of Justin Williams.

It's a stretch but I like an SJ/WAS final with WAS taking the cup in 7. "

Time for STL and SJ to slay those demons...just a feeling.

Thanks - this is great stuff.

I just filled in my NHL bracket challenge bracket and ended up with Washington/Anaheim in the final. Picked the Caps to win the Cup which feels bold despite their season, given that they've only been to the final once before in their franchise history, and got swept by Detroit.

Looking at the playoffs as a whole, I was a bit disappointed to see that the only upset I projected was Chi/StL. There will almost certainly be more....

Thanks. I was pulling players off the NHL game stats, so I didn't see McNally since he didn't get a game with the big club.

I had totally forgotten about this deal though. Good stuff!
