Saying the Red Wings' "need to score more goals" is kinda like saying that I "need to get a little bit faster" in order to be an Olympic sprinter. I mean, I'll be the first to argue that Blashill could have squeezed more goals out of this roster if he had used his players a little differently (more games for Pulkky, more time for Tatar, etc.) but even with perfect usage the talent really just isn't there.

I think less games for Pulkky would be in the teams best interest. The guy is no good. He supposedly has a "great shot." but there is only 1 problem, HE CANNOT HIT THE FREAKING NET!!! And the rest of his game is mediocre AT BEST.

I admit it's weasely, but there's a reason I said "pace" and not "consistent 40-goal scorer."

For three straight seasons (2006, 2007, 2008) Hank's goals per game scoring rate projected out for 40+ goals over 82 games. During that timeframe he scored 115 goals in 215 games, which is a shade under 44 per 82.

Larkin: 1.01
Tatar: 0.94
Pulkkinen: 0.78
Abdelkader: 0.71
Nyquist: 0.6
Datsyuk: 0.59

He's had crap for linemates, too, with Andersson, Sheahan, Weiss, Nike, and Helm his most frequent forward partners.

Granted the sample size is small here for Pulkkinen -- we're only talking about 8 goals in ~613 minutes here. So it doesn't prove that he's got the chops to score goals consistently over the long run. And I agree with you that he's got to keep working on other aspects of his game.

On the other hand, I see no evidence to suggest he can't score at the NHL level. He ripped up the AHL and has scored at a fairly impressive rate so far in the extremely limited minutes he's been given at the NHL level. Maybe with more minutes he'd eventually show that he couldn't handle the tougher competition, but it bothers me that he hasn't even been allowed to try, despite the fact that lack of offense has been the No. 1 problem with this team all year long.
