Its tough for young kids to do this job. In two different cities I've reffed in we had to have one senior ref working the novice and atom rec games because coaches were just verbally abusing the crap out of teenage children over things such close offside calls and icings. It's disgraceful.

It took me back to 20 years during my first game. A coach just swore at me the entire game and I was 14 and too nervous to even give him 2 minutes let alone have him suspended for multiple games.

Very difficult. I was reffing during an atom house tourney and this one country was.... straight up losing his sanity... because his player was offside. Except the player wasn't offside because the puck was....ya know... in the NEUTRED ZONE! which I explained without hesitation and hatred...

Once the ass't coach understood neutered zone - all was good.

Say big words and pretend you know what they mean - is not the lesson here.

Chilluns is smattttta than.... ah forget

ive been reffing for like 8 years now, and am the RIC in our town

About once a month i go down and do a pewee house league game, just to show the younger refs the proper way to communicate with a bench to calm down situations.... or how to deal with it if they refuse to accept reason

One assistant coach was known for being an idiot towards the young guys, so i was reffing him. About 10 mins in i told the head coach, that his assistant is done. Ive listened to him for 10 mins and i wont any more, anything else its a penalty.

Hes like just kick him off the bench. I responded " nope you are the head coach, you have to have control your bench, if you want him gone, you can remove him from your bench"

5 mins later when their team had a 2 on 1 and he wanted to chew my ear off on the play that made his team get a 2 on one advantage, he gets a bench minor. Same conversation had with the head coach, he finally just kicked him off the bench

Havent heard any complaints since
