Filthy has a putrid defense and good goaltending so I expect ~40 SOG and 2 goals or fewer. Hopefully it will be enough to win. |

Did you see somewhere already that Pouliot isn't playing tonight? I didnt read that anywhere... |

Hey Ryan, did you know that at even strength between 2011 and 2015 Geno has all of three assists against Sean Couturier? I don't think Coots' ability shut down Malkin is a myth...
Malkin does control the possetion metrics with a 56% rating, but you gotta remember Coots is almost always starting in his own end #context |

Penguins and Malkin scored a ton in the 2012 series. Couturier didn't shut down anything. Fleury melting down and stupidity were the self-inflicted reasons the Pens got embarrassed. Couturier had nothing to do with that. NJD crushed Filthy the very next series because their goalie could stop beach balls and they didn't take a bunch of penalties. |

So are we going to discount four regular seasons at even strength because of one high scoring playoff series? Seems silly to me
Edit: three seasons |

the devils skated and checked the flyers into oblivion after game 1. they had no answer. that's why they won.
nevermind what couturier did in a playoff series 3 years ago. he's really had a great stretch of play and is becoming the 2nd C they desperately need. fortunate for the pens he's out. |

I think Couturier is a good player that is plenty capable of matching up against top centers. However, the prevailing opinion that Malkin was/is shutdown by him is completely untrue. |

Three assists in about 12 games during even strength. Is that not at least partially shut down? |

No. It's just randomness. I'll bet Malkin's relative numbers against Kopitar, Toews, J Staal, etc. aren't optimal either. Malkin had 8 points in 6 games in the playoff series when this narrative inexplicably started. |

I think it's a bit of both. If you're going to claim Malkin was "shut down", the guy shouldn't have 8pts in 6 games. Couturiererierier is a nice defensive player. I'm not taking that away from him. I think he's over-rated but he seems to be having a fairly nice season so far.
What drove me nuts was our dumb ass coach not taking advantage of the line matchups at the home games. |

I don't agree with you much, but I sure as hell agree with that. Flyers, Isis, Iran, Bin Laden....pretty much all the same to me. |

All I know is, Couturier has utterly frustrated Malkin for the past 3 seasons, and I don't need statistics to know it. |

Yeah the first thing I thought when I read that was that shutdown and possession aren't the same thing. Geno can hold the puck all he wants but if he isn't getting shots off or providing tangible offense, I would still say Couturier was shutting him down. |

And it's not like Couturier's job is to push offense against Malkin. His job is to smother him and keep him off the scoresheet. Getting outshot is not typically the concern with a shutdown guy on the ice, keeping the puck out of the net is. |

I crunched the numbers and Geno's average persona shot attempts per 60 over the last three years (Couturier's career) at even strength is 9.something. His shot attempts per 60 with Cooter on the ice is 5.something. That's pretty significant. |

i dont think coots was as good in that series as people like to legendarily build up. however, he has basically lived up to the billing in the games since. not to mention the mental frustration and bad penalties that geno takes as a result makes it all the more apparent.
coots is a damn good player. i watch a lot of flyers games. he is starting to find a little offensive touch. he is very similar to an asset akin to that of our long lost buddy jordan staal. |
