Tanner, it amazes me you aren't a NHL coach or GM with all of your high-level thinking.

So, you think only qualified people who are good at their jobs work in the NHL? I could probably easily be a better GM than 10 or so guys who are currently employed.

Hell, my cat Pete would be superior to at least Benning and Maloney.

If you come to this conclusion that the Coyotes should trade Larsson, then you should also come to the conclusion that the Coyotes will never become a top team.

Predicting the Coyotes play to take a turn for worse, isn't exactly seeing something that anyone else didn't see happening. No need for an "I told you so" for stating predicting something that pretty much everybody knew would happen.

What would you expect to get for OEL? Make some realistic hypothetical trades.
At some point if the Coyotes want to be competitive, they are going to have to hand out big contracts. If the ownership group won't do that, then they shouldn't own the team.
BTW, Nashville is a very good team.

I don't think you follow this team closely. I do and and I told you so was totally necessary.

I don't follow your logic though. Trading an elite player in his prime when you can't win is just solid game theory. It should be done way more often. It's smart business.

Here's some logic for you James. You don't become a top team by trading elite players. You become a top team by keeping elite players. This is where you get hung up in looking at numbers again. OEL will remain a top echelon defenseman for the next 10 years, if not longer. Ohh, but he won't be in his absolute statistical prime anymore. Who cares!

James, saying I told you so, for predicting the Coyotes fall from grace, is really silly. The entire hockey world knew it was going to happen, eventually.

It would be a very bold move for sure.

Draisitl ,this year's first , and Griffin Reinhart. I doubt they would give up Nurse.

Eberle and a top five protected first this year. Your blog did say that OEL is just about over the hill so don't get to greedy.

EDM will want to wait until the lottery positions are handed out. I could see that happening at the end of the season if EDM somehow didn't win the 1st pick this year. What else ya got?

I don't think the oilers pay it for a couple reasons.
Nurse is gonna be cheap for the next few years.

I think they want multiple elite top pairing defenders (sekera and klefbom are nice- but not that) and nurse is the only opportunity they have. 15 games in and he's already playing really well. Just feels like it might be a sideways move long term.

The big one is that Nurses tenacity and mean streak are something that can't be taught. And an attribute that they're desperately in need of.
I think nurses develipment is as important to the organizations as mvdavids in many ways.

The proposal wasn't crazy and any gm would have to seriously consider it for a guy of oel's caliber. But I think they'd say no considering he's gonna want a gazillion in 2 seasons. But they'd desperately try and steer Maloney in another direction

Eff the lottery pick.

Deal it while it has high value/potential and hope to get out of the bottom

Even if they didn't- oel >>>>> whoever theydve gotten in the draft

All players have a price tag . . . Gretzky, Messier, even (dare I say it) OEL.

So, in theory, yeah, if the Yotes were offered 2-3 prospects who legitimately projected as top 6 forwards/top 4 defensemen, a 1st round pick and maybe another later pick, a nice rebuilding package, you'd have to look at that.

Question is, how many teams are that desperate for an admittedly very, very good defenseman?

Otherwise, if you're the Yotes, you follow the formula that has driven most Stanley Cup teams of the last several years:

1) accumulating picks through dealing veterans that fill a need elsewhere but don't really help you be anything better than a bubble team
2) using those picks very wisely (amateur scouting)
3) making very shrewd trades and acquisitions of younger players (pro scouting)
4) smart cap management
5) holding on to legitimate franchise players (see point 4)

Nurse is not going anywhere.
What about OEL straight for any forward you want not named Connor?

It is not going to happen anyways, but think about it, with OEL, Nurse, Klefbom, Sekera, out of a sudden our D is looking quite alright (when Sekera is the worst of them that says this is a pretty good team), it would not matter losing one of our beloved "core players".

Or.

Schultzy, our first and a prospect.

Well said John.

Pretty amazing that the Hawks just won their 3rd Stanley Cup with 30 year old Brent Seabrooke, and 32 year old Duncan Keith, anchoring their defense. Both players are well past their statistical prime!
