Jennifer B Cutler: The Curious Case of Tomas Plekanec Tomas Plekanec will be an UFA after the 2015-2016 season. Should Marc Bergevin try to extend him or will it be time to part ways?

Solid blog.

Plek will retire a Habs.

Quite sure he'll get a reasonable cap hit contract.

Plekanec is a solid number 2 center and on some teams would only be the # 3.

I hate this saying. It's as irrelevant as the Toronto Maple Leafs in May.
He's a top 60 center in the NHL. This makes him a top 6 center.

Toews, Seguin, Kopitar, Tavares, Stamkos, (insert Star centre)

All those guys might not be a top 3 center on the Penguins. And if one of the surpasses Crosby or Malkin, that makes Crosby or Malkin a 3rd line centre?

He's 24th in points among centres this year playing on a 2nd line most of the year.

I would say he's a 1st line center on a bottom half team or a 2nd center on a top half team. Leave it as that...

If Galchenyuk is remotely close to becoming a top half 1st centre in the next 2 years, you have no choice but to resign Plek as he will be a great two-way centre and would make Galchenyuk/Plek a top centre threat in the NHL. Not many teams would better that duo if Galchenyuk hits potential.

Maybe in Toronto and per TSN...

Other networks, such as the ones who actually have playoff hockey on them didn't care much about it... just sayin...

Although I agree those charity golf tournaments are pretty interesting, but they aren't even in the Toronto limits...

I thought he was already traded and the Habs are waiting for the playoffs to be over to announce it.

In my opinion Plekanec is a huge part of the reason the Habs can't make it to the "next level". He is a regular season player and not a playoff player. His abilities and his stats are perfectly suited for a long, boring, grinding season, and most certainly not for a fast paced, aggressive, burst of heart-felt competitive fire that are the NHL playoffs. Thomas Plekanec has never really showed up for the post-season, he just grinds it out over 82games, puts up solid numbers, and collects his paycheck.

He has to go if the Habs truly want to make a run at a championship.

I think Plecky could be a very good playoff performer, he is fast, dependable & has some of the most responsibility on the team, the problem is he is overused all season long ( playing against the other teams best players, best penalty killer & on the powerplay a lot of the time) & has little left every year for the playoffs.

Montreal's lack of depth in the centre position is the reason why they will not win the cup with the current team they have. Honestly, Plek is a pretty decent player, but I'd move him for future pieces that can improve montreal's potential... which is something that appears to be dimming these last few years. Montreal needs a leader and one in the centre position.

LAck of depth at wing is the real reason...
You can have all the depth down the middle in the world and not succeed if your center's playing with Weise and Prust.
