This isn't shocking considering his 2nd half last season.

At 36, it might just be as simple as he's not an NHL player anymore. It happens.

Yeah age certainly factors in, I imagine.

Yet he is NEVER a healthy scratch? He must know where the bodies are buried? The best part is he is on the team dime for 3.1 million next year!! Another great lou lamerillio free agent signing!!

Good to know the numbers back up what I thought of him. His play has gone from decent to straight to hell within a year. He shouldn't even be on the 4th line at this point it's utterly pitiful. He brings down whatever line he's put on.

Funny read comments on fire and ice that Matteau was another zubrus... I don't get how a guy who lays out the Kings captain and a guy who never even leans on players are considered the same but I guess that's the Internet lol

Age is certainly a factor, but I think the fact that he entered the league at such a young age and has played over 1200 games in the NHL is what really has caught up to him. Pretty sure he's in the top 100, if not top 50 in all time games played in the NHL.

That's a lot of mileage for a player who's still just 36. The fact that he was never very skilled or had much speed means that once he lost a few steps, his offense dried up. He isn't fast enough to pull the power moves from the outside, cutting to the net that he used to be so good at doing.

When he first came to jersey he had speed and wasn't horrible like now. but time has definitely caught up with him. Sucks I always liked him, I remember a few years ago when he was hurt all year how it was a huge loss to the team but ever since then he hasn't been the same player he was before

A lot of Devils fans think matteau is a bum that does nothing. Not quite sure why that is but that's what they think.

Obviously Zubrus is a shell of what he was a few years ago, but he's in his late 30s, so that's unsurprising. Zubrus was a good player for us for years though. He won board battles and helped to drive possession. If Matteau ends up filling that role I'll consider him a successful pick. I couldn't give a crap whether he hits people or is considered soft by people who can only see flash.

Hallelujah! I've been saying this for almost two years now, this guy is absolutely brutal. I've never seen such a waste of a 6'5 frame. If Lou didn't have the tenure he does, it's moves like Volchenkov, Zajac, and Zubrus that would land him in real hot water. If Mike Richards can exist in the AHL I'd give serious consideration to doing the same with Zubrus. He has not future on this team but nobody in their right mind would claim him.

I agree. When they were still "in the race" I never understood why Ryder and Havlat were scratched over Zubrus. At least there is goal scoring potential in Ryder and Havlat, but even on his good nights Zubrus doesn't contribute.

He should have been let go/not resigned years ago. He's not the kind of player you see on good teams.

I hope he and Elias are done after this season. Be done with cammilari also. Same with Ryder and Havlat - we are way to heavy on our top 9 with old, underperforming guys who good teams let go of. Time to move on

What has cammilari done to underperform?

If anything you should worry about your boys in buffalo not the roster in New Jersey

He's ageing. The lesson "should" have been learned by now about hanging on and signing contracts for multi years when players are in the early 30s.

If anything, I love to talk Devils hockey. You're welcome to stop by the Sabres forum tho - best blogger on HB and quite a future to look forward to, if you're into that kind of thing

He's scoring goals which no one else is really doing

Also I'm really glad you're so proud of tanking. Takes a special person. Enjoy running the oilers model.

Funny that you talk about all these old guys on multi year contracts when the only guys over 30 signed beyond next season are Cammy and Greene. If you love talking devils hockey you should go to fire and ice. They're a bunch of idiots over there so you should fit in a lot better.
