What kind of game do you think he should be given? A bottom-of-the-standings game so that screwing up wouldn't have much effect?

Not so concerned about which teams are involved or the venue. Just want to make sure he gets ongoing
constructive feedback and support. What's lacking in today's NHL are the John McCauley, John Ashley, Frank Udvari and Dave Newell types who will guide you -- not coddle you whatsoever, believe me -- but give you the tools to succeed and valuable advice. They would teach you how to be a referee at the pro level. They'd push you hard with tough love teaching but there WAS love to it.
These days, far too often what officials get are conflicting edicts, no coaching or bad coaching and are then tossed in the water and told to swim by folks who never officiating a thing in their lives and even by supervisors who ought to know better but don't stand up to it.
