lame i feel:

so to get this straight a guy like Mackinnon couldnt play for Canada; but would have to play for the "young guns" team?

Odd I find..

I actually think it's a North American under 23 made up of players not on the US and Canadian squads and a EU All Star team made of players from countries not other wise represented.

I would think that the home country would get "rights" first. If not selected then they could fall to the 'young guns'

any international hockey tournament not run by the IIHF lacks any credibility. the WC will be nothing but an All-Star showcase.

I agree.
I thinnk the Euro "Others" team could be a pretty good squad... barring language barriers. Better than teams getting pummeled as they only have one NHLer on the roster with a bunch of other guys.

Never was a fan of the World Cup , useless and nothing to it , and once again it's shown with a gimmick like format.

The real celebration of hockey is every 4 years at the Winter Olympics when countries compete for something meaningful.

If it is North American for under 23 team, allowing Canada and US to choose the players they want first (over the under 23 team), that would make the under 23 team tons worse (taking the top 5-6 players off the under 23 team), but to not allow them to choose (for Canada and US) it would give a more equal ground.

If you allow the player to choose, they should always choose Canada or US, because if I asked you to play for your country or some random under 23 team, I think the choice should be obvious.

I like the under 23 squad and think they could do things to the vets on all the teams. The only issue may be the goalie for under 23, if there is not a good choice, then they won't be in games. But overall, I like the idea of "mixing" it up.

I like it.

The tournament doesn't really mean anything anyway, so why not make it fun?

Kopitar, Girgensons, Grabovski... Who wouldn't love cheering for that rag-tag group of players from forgotten European countries?

Better than watching Austria get poopkicked over and over and over again.

Fair enough. The tournament with full teams would do that. No need to make it even more gimmicky with these stupid all star teams.

The only incentive players from Europe are going to have to play in this stupid thing (and forfeit their summer at home) is the cash.

It would not surprise me one bit if a bunch of guys opt out of this tournament, citing 'injuries'.

Who is voting yes to this? The under 23 team is a joke and completely makes the tournament meaningless just a all star game where players all get a participation ribbon.

some good points

i just feel if a team wants a player who is under 23 to play for their country they should get dibs on them.

canada would likely want mackinnon for example on their team.

Use a 1980-era map.

US, CAN, Czechoslovakia, USSR (including Latvia/Ukraine), lump in the Scandanavian countries (SWE, FIN, NOR, DEN) and a Europen team consisting of, but not limited to, SWI, AUS, GER, SLO, FRA, POL and a team for the rest of the world aka a team that would get destroyed.

two 3 team divisions, top 2 teams from each division advance to semi's, Canada wins gold, nobody cares outside of Canada

So without really looking at who would be on the team, Canada would be taking the best under 23 player (or whomever Canada or US wants would be the top players on the under 23 team), but Mackinnon would not be the best player on the Canada team.

So they really can't get "dibs" on a player.

Example:

Team Canada
Mackinnon (2-3 line)

Team under 23
Mackinnon (first line)

The point is, without an under 23 team, maybe 5-6 of them would be on their Canada or US team, where the others would not be on any team. So by adding this under 23 team, it adds more great players to play against more great players.
