Jan Levine: Quick Recap on Win Over Columbus, More on Staal, Look Forward to Pitt Game
A potpurri of topics... - airjan23
I dont think it's a terrible deal, really what are our other options? If mcdonagh can stay healthy, staal is great in the 2nd pairing. The way we've been scoring this year, until last week that is, im more ok with his lack of offensive presence, especially with the way klein has stepped up in that regard. In three years if we dont like it, we move him to carolina. It wouldnt have happened now, in the middle of their overhaul anyway. That gives us enough time to develop skjei(hopefully), and stay in a win-now mode. Yeah it could be ugly in a couple years, thats usually the case, but staal has been, for lack of a better word, a stalwart, on out blue line for quite some time now. If we moved him now, we wouldnt have gotten anything in return that would immediately improve our team. And thats why im most ok with it for now. Keep this core together and try to get henrik a cup before hes too old.

I like the deal. At 28, he has many good years ahead. The rate the Rangers are getting is surely less than another team would have to pay Staal if he went UFA this summer; and it's less than 2M more than he makes now. |

It's only an overpay if you can get better cheaper - that is your call.
If cross checking the back of someone's head is stopping him then he did a good job on Crosby. Wonder if the zebras will let that type of play go unsanctioned next time - if not what other tools has he got in his kit to keep the Sid & Geno cannons quite? |

So it's the cross check that kept Crosby to 1 goal in 7 games, I thought it was the wrist? |

I would do the Shaw or Palmieri trade although I highly doubt we'd be getting a 1st rounder back from Chicago - HankdaTank
Interesting indeed, but would Chicago trade for Zucc if they can't resign him during offseason? |

Agreed. And the Wilson trade is a laugher.
Rangers are in win now mode. Zucc stays and walks in ufa

You think with a winger like Kunitz Crosby could play with 2 broken arms

Can't remember how many assists in there nor does it matter what happened last year, the question was if that is all Staal has in his bag of tricks then stopping the opposition guns may be difficult if he starts getting called out? Does he offer anything else? In the past games this year he hasn't had an impact (from memory), but you have still won. You haven't needed him yet, when you need him is when we'll find out I guess. Are you confident in his abilities I suppose is the biggest question?? |

For Zuke the years are more important than the $$. I'm still hoping for a 5 year deal. Maybe for as low as 3.75M per ...! |

Sitting on tarmac to leave to UK, but I will get a broader blog up on this in the near future. I think Zucc stays, he wants to be here, he helps drive possession and is physical and as important or more so, he is a key component on the squad on-and-off the ice. The dollars may be a bit less than he expected but still a good salary. Look for MSL to get an incentive laden deal, which reduces the initial cap hit but has the potential to materially impact the cap in the future. |

anything is possible. Ufa he's probably worth between 5.5 and 6 on a 6 yr deal. |

coming into the season, I'd have probably said he could get a similar deal that Brassard got, 5 years 25 mil. But he has regressed majorly this season.
Maybe a team with lots of cap space will go that high still, but it won't be us.
I'd give him 4 years 16 million liked Edmonton gave Pouliot right now. But with the wingers the Rangers have coming up and cap situation, no way they can go high nor should they.
He has scored in two games of the Rangers last 21 they have played. |

He and Zucc were both RFA's this past summer, one year away from UFA.
The Rangers chose to sign Brass long term and there was rumors of the backdoor agreement that the Rangers would pay Zucc a one year deal now and then sign him long term to after the new year.
I think his lousy season has changed things a bit |
