Not that I wouldn't mind having McDavid next year.....but I'm still gonna show up for 30+ home games and cheer for them to win. |

I'm about the same. I have NEVER showed up at PNC Arena rooting for a Canes loss and never will. I can 1/2 bring myself to not minding a Canes loss for a game I am not watching live if the team is completely eliminated from any playoff hopes.
We are not anywhere close to there yet. I pull for a Canes win Tuesday to get things headed in the right direction before the long road trip. |

Jordan Eberle + for Eric Staal - Jeropotato
I feel that would be an even 1 for 1. Not easy to get a younger guy with that skill. |

I think it helps the Oilers in the short term. Hopefully Draisaitl will develop well and ease the pain of Staals eventual free agent departure. |

he got hit by matt martin and I'd guess from watching it that he's hurt his back. Probably not too serious, but he went down like he'd been shot and then tried to keep playing but couldn't.

I didn't really think so either, that's why I threw on the plus. Don't get too carried away with it though, only a mid level prospect or mid round pick. |

No, exactly. Not sure you really need another 70-90 point center, but we don't really need anoth 60+ point winger either. It's our center depth that's taken the biggest hit of late.
Plus Skinner-McDavid-Eberle is a nice idea, but I'm not sure how many games one can expect to win with it. |

I hate to break the news to you (actually, I don't but whatever), but if we continue our crappy performances, both staals and many other players are going to shipped out of town for whatever we can get for them. And a lot of the return isn't going to be guys the caliber of eberle.
Actually in the case of eberle. I'd venture to guess we have to throw the + in. Maybe Yak would come at an even 1 for 1, but I think fans over value their players. Too many teams are showing that building through the draft is far superior than trying to acquire contracts. |

You've got to be kidding. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to come across players of the caliber of Eric Staal?
If the team is falling apart already and losing a bunch of games, why the hell would you trade your best player (He is. It's not even close) when you're going to be losing games anyway? It accomplishes nothing. Nothing you get back will be as good as he is.
Also, I have no idea why you seem to think Eberle is more valuable than Eric Staal. It's absurd. Eberle is a good player, sure, and he's fun to watch, but come on. He averages almost 10 points less per season than Staal and is even worse in his own end. |

I just checked his stats...holy crap, Staal hasn't been much more than than a 70 point player in years, and even then, not very often. Still, I get your point, a big body that can get you close to 70 at center doesn't grow on trees. |

There comes a point when you have to weigh the present with the future. Neither Staal is the future of this team, and even in the present they aren't getting it done. Do you continue to build around a captain that takes the majority of the game off, or do you break it down, get some studs to build around, and shape your organization from the ground up? The answer is obvious. Look at Pittsburgh and Chicago. That's what we need right now.

You honestly believe that? Pittsburgh and Chicago didn't wind up where they were on purpose. They got that way due to extraordinairy mismanagement. For every team Chicago or Pittsburgh there's a half dozen Florida's and Edmontons.
You have to maximize what assets you have, just like any other business. The people we WANT to trade, nobody wants (Liles, Harrison, Gleason, Ward, etc.) and the guys that people will actually give us equal value for (Skinner, Lindholm, Sekera, Faulk) we don't actually want to trade. You can find a taker for the Staals and Semins and the like, but you aren't going to get good value in return.
So what do you do? Do you dump Both Staals for mediocre prospects and picks and hope what you draft turns out better than what you had in the first place? This isn't 2003. You can't just dump contracts everywhere. Karmanos won't agree to eat salary, and we have to try and stay Cap compliant at the same time. |
