Do not want to nitpick the great Bill Meltzer, but it's a nine game tryout for Morin, not ten.

Last but not least, in regard to the rumor Bob McKenzie reported last night that the Flyers are shopping Luke Schenn or Nicklas Grossmann in an effort to "make room" for Morin, I simply don't see that happening this season. As widely respected as McKenzie is, this particular rumor simply doesn't add up. You don't make room for a player you intend to dress in 10 games at the maximum.
- bmeltzer

exactly my first thought when I saw McKenzie's video ... I just didn't see how the 2 are related. If the Flyers DO trade Schenn or Grossmann (or whomever) it would likely have nothing to do with Morin, but it would be for cap (or other) reasons.

glad the preseason is over ... I'm ready for some hockey.

I think Bob McKenzie's comments were chosen carefully. All he is saying is that the Flyers are looking to move a defenseman (cap is a concern) and that Schenn has always been available, but some (whether from the Flyers or around the league) believe Grossmann is available partially due to the play of Sam Morin.

I don't think the organization is moving a defenseman for Morin to have a spot, but were planning to move out a defenseman and may have sped up their process to facilitate Morin getting a nine game look at the NHL level.

From what I've gathered, McKenzie's comments were provided in the context if Morin makes the team. If Morin makes the team, most certainly Grossmann or Schenn would be going. But Morin won't make the team for the full season. So it's null and void. Much like Eklund, McKenzie hears things and reports it. But unlike Eklund, Bob has the reputation of throwing stuff out there that's legitimate 99% of the time.

Excuse me?

Also, I see Giroux's hockey idol was/is Doug Gilmour. It all makes sense now.

One of the things Morin said during interviews is that the NHL felt very different. That back in the Q, he did not have to work as hard as he was just so much bigger than everyone, he could push them around and they could not push back. But guys like Jagr... they could not be pushed around the same way and he had to work differently to contain them. As Morin is ineligible for the AHL and too physically mature for the Q to be challenged, has anyone come to the conclusion that maybe the Flyers are keeping him around for the first few games to give him a taste of the NHL to understand how far he still has to go? Kinda like they did with Laughton before they sent him back to the OHL? Hagg and Ghost will be on the Phantoms but Morin is going to be a giant playing amongst children back in the Q. Keeping him around for the Max is probably the best thing Hextall can do for his Development... but I find it highly unlikely they will keep him beyond those first 10 games.

Good post. The Sbisa/Morin dichotomy is played out pretty well in this blog and posts. You can destroy a young Dman's confidence and development by pushing him into competition he is not ready to handle. On the other hand, young guys need progression in their game. If not challenged progress can fall off. 9 games with the Flyers, a stint with Team Canada at the world juniors and a trade to a Memorial Cup contender and a long run in the playoffs would make for a solid development year. (Note: Rimouski is off to a great start so maybe the Memorial Cup run has already started for Morin).

I've been pretty impressed with morin but, I hope Mackenzie is blowing smoke, for the simple fact that the only guy on this roster Morin could supplant is Schenn. If the flyers expect Morin to replace Grossmann this year then we're (frank)ed.

I would like to see Morin get his 9 games and go back to the Q. Seems in the best interest of everyone (except for who ever sits for him!). As for trading a D man, I think other posters are correct, only if they decided he will go past 9 games (which they will not!).

Now what to do with Shultz!? He has looked terrible thus far and is paid entirely too much to be a unreliable #7. I hope if/when someone goes down they use Manning or Alt or Hagg or Ghost (the later three only later in the season after some AHL seasoning).

So who sits for Morin's 9 games (assuming he gets them)?

Seravalli wrote an article today suggesting that the trade rumor was to actually open up a spot for Ghost. The Sbisa comparison Bill made just gives more credence to that. And maybe it's not Grossmann or Schenn. Maybe it's Coburn back to Edmonton?

I think they do trade a D player. Keep Sammy for 9 games and send him back. The bring up Ghost.

To me it doesn't make sense to trade Grossmann or Schenn to bring up Ghost. Think about it. You'd have a lineup with Streit, A Mac, MDZ and Ghost. That's bad enough. But Coburn really doesn't use his size like a typical big man. So really the only true physical defensemen you would have left would be the one of Grossmann/Schenn who remains.

That would be way too soft of a defense.

Hello McDavid

Ghost would have to replace MDZ for it to make even a shred of sense IMHO.

Edit: without trading Coburn. Which is impossible since no one wanted MDZ just a month ago.

And then what do they do after they send Morin back after the 9 games? Play Schultz?

Amen. The benefits of Morin returning to the QMJHL after his 9 game stint outweigh the benefit and risks of Morin sticking for the whole season.

Morin won't make the Flyers a Stanley Cup contender, so why keep him up now? Unless he comes in and really kicks ass and is the team's best Dman for the course of his 9 games, I sent him back down.

Im still on the fence...to be fair I have seen the games but don't see him at practices or how he's handled things off the ice, day in and day out. I will caution though... yes there's Sbisa...but there's also some talented Kids' who do grow as an 18 or 19 year old while cutting teeth in the NHL.....Pronger as an example.....Vlasic.....Neidermyer....Boumeester....it depends on individual. It depends on if they feel there is anything to gain by sending him back to the Q (I think there is). : He's huge...he can skate...he's not intimidated and has a physical element to him......personally I think he goes back.
something know one wants to mention.....Morin can play more then 9 games and still go back ...yes I know it burns a year off of the ELC but he can still be returned at anytime....Considering his future in the organization Im not sure they would lose to much sleep over that ...he could still play in the World Jrs and so on.

I think that during the course of this season, the flyers will realize that Brayden Schenn is neither a power forward nor a finisher and will be removed from the first line. I believe that spot will eventually belong to Jason Akeson who, despite some shortcomings, has shown signs that he can be a finisher at the NHL level.....something the flyers desperately need but never seem to attain.
