I'm of the belief that high-end centers -- with the rare exception of guys like, say, in-prime Jagrs and Selannes of the world -- are the only forwards you give 8 years on contracts.

I agree with the premise of this article. I like Bobby Ryan as a player, and yeah, he's gonna score goals. But I think it's fair to question whether he's gonna score enough goals to justify a 6, 7 or 8-year commitment at big dollars.

If it were me, I think I'd cut bait and let that be someone else's problem, if I'm Ottawa.

They're not going to make the playoffs this year or for the foreseeable future, so you might as well clean house and start all over again.

Having lived in Edmonton for many years and seeing star after star leave...it did not take long to pick up on the nonverbal cues and the body language that invariably lead to trades out of town. In my opinion Ryan does not want to be there; especially now that Spezza is gone. Trade him sooner then later to ensure fair market value is returned.

Put him on Sid's line and watch those numbers spike back up. Pens dont seem like good trade partners, however.

Currently I have divisional foes Boston, Tampa Bay, Montreal, Detroit, and perhaps even Toronto ahead of them going into this season.

No way man, you're crazy. The Leafs will be lucky to finish 15th in the East this year.

Of course they should trade him, they should trade Karlsson too, if you think those two top level players will want to stay long-term after missing the playoffs a couple seasons in a row and KNOWING the owner doesn't spend as much as the other teams in the league, if they are a true athlete who wants to WIN and COMPETE, they will both either ask to leave or be traded. This team just seems like a waste of space to me, I liked the Sens and Leafs rivalry, but Ottawa is going to stay pretty stagnant I feel with only prospects to look forward too.

And yet we will continue, year after year, to finish ahead of you in the standings...

Ottawa may trade Ryan, may not, but either way he's gonna score some goals for us this year and either help us to the playoffs or grab us another first round pick and player.

Oh boy, we got a special one here

You do realize Ottawa has not missed the playoffs in back to back seasons since 94-95 right?

The mighty Leafs managed to make the playoffs once in the past NINE seasons

In other words...typical Leafs fan who's dumb as (frank)

I'd like to see a 5 year 35m for Bobby. These 7-8 year deals are insane unless you are an elite player.

I love how everyone in here believes the Senators are garbage. Most of you in here said the same thing a few seasons ago, and we went on to push a Game-7 against a 1st seeded NY Rangers, and then went on to beat the 2nd Seeded Montreal Canadiens in 5 games. All of this was achieved with what in your eyes seemed like mediocre players. The truth is the Senators are packed with prospects who are in the verge of breaking through (Stone, Hoffman, Zibanejad, Turris, Cowen, Wiercioch, Pageau) None of you knew these players 3 seasons ago. Last season these group of players went through a rough patch, so does that mean you just trade away every veteran present on this squad. FRANK NO. I assure you most of you will again be surprised at what this team will make of with this coming season. They are by no means elite or a sure thing, but they are most definitely a dark horse in the Eastern Conference.

Someone who isn't senile in here. I love your post. I agree that it would be a mistake to give Ryan a 7-8 year deal.

Unlike the Oilers, the Senators year after year have always been competitive.

No this coming from someone who speaks the truth here and is realistic. Also did I mention the Leafs in my post?.

Realist? If you were slightly a realist you would know that in sports anything is possible. So to rule the Senators out of the Playoffs for not only this year but years to come, like you suggested, is everything but realistic.

So when is Kessel and some of the other Leaf players leaving...unless you are saying they are not true athletes who want to WIN and COMPETE
