Lucas Neilson: Fantasy Hockey - Keeper Leagues and HBSL
Strategy

I'm in a keeper. League Rules, only 3 keepers per team. Can only pick Skaters that have been drafted 2009-14. Goalies from 06-2014. Only 5 add/drops allowed all year. Very fun.

In my keepers, I chose to keep Palmieri over Soderberg. Did I do good? My reasons were that Palmieri is signed for another year at a good caphit and I am kinda scare soderberg's production is not sustainable and inflated by Boston's great depth.

So how bad did I do?

Right on!
How many players on each team total?

im assuming that the add/drops are for guys injured and or playing terrible?

-I've heard of some keepers that even if he guy is hurt you cant replace him! that tough, and cruel!!

not a whole lot I can say on keeper leagues due to the fact that they are so different and all have different settings compared to some of the more common pools.

on that note I have a good lineup of blogs ahead this week, sorry if this one was a bit bland!

12 players, 2 goalies, 2 IR spots. But that's what make keeper leagues fun. It's hard to blog about them due the fact that every single on is differnet.

tough to say at this point - both teams are powerhouses.

Soderberg will likely be a third line player in Boston, for quite some time unless he can out perform guys like Reilly Smith or Brad Marchand.

Smith and Krug are both unsigned at this point; but id imagine both will be signed sooner than later and keep Soderberg on the third line. I highly doubt he puts up the same numbers this season as last.

Palmieri on the other hand could end up lines 2-4 on the Ducks....its hard to say.

Both of their top 2 lines have a slot or 2 open the way I see it. One beside Getzlaf and Perry and the other beside Kesler (who knows who wins the position) -there are a number of quality young forwards on Anaheim.

It's too hard to say whether or not you won/lost that one yet, they are both so early in their career and they both have the luxury of being on great teams. Pretty much a wash so I wouldn't sweat it!

Keepers are really fun. Always something to do and think of. Mine is 20 players. And 10 keepers. Salary cap same as actual NHL. 4 drops and 1 IR spot that you can put an injured player for the time he is injured and draft a free agent. When the injured players comes back, you have the choice to keep him and drop him and keep the FA.
Lots of fun. Youth is a big part of your team.

My thought too, I feel that with Palmieri it could be a home run, more risky but potentially more rewards too.

Love your work here, very insightful and interesting. Keep it up

We drafted and we had to pick keepers at the draft. I won it last year my team was very good. Even without a real solid option in net. My Keepers are Mackinnon and Holtby. Holtby was a bad choice.

My team last year was.

Seguin
Mackinnon
Johansen
Saad
Kreider
Eakin
Monahan
Granlund
Fowler
Larsson
Faulk
Brodin

Goalies: Holtby and Lehner

this here is one of the best parts about a keeper!

with 10 keepers and a salary cap you must have to keep a close eye on some of these inflated new salary's some of the players are getting...not easy to afford having a P Kane and Toews on your roster!! lol crazy...

with only 4 moves a season you must really have to put some thought into who you are going to drop/pickup! I like the intensity there

Palmieri has room to grow the way I see it, I feel that Soderberg is almost locked into that third line position until they remove one of the top 6 guys...I hope for your sake that Palmieri is not on the 4th line to start the season; he shouldn't be, he was great as the season progressed, and in the playoffs.

thanks man! looking forward to getting this season underway!

very good mix up front there! Saad and Kreider both had great seasons. Of course Monahan was a solid rookie and Granlund surprised a lot of people too.

Holtby and Washington goaltending was a disaster last year...seemed like the coaching staff wasn't sure who to play from game to game, huge problem IMO.

so you wont know who your keepers are until you have finished this years draft? is that right? who are you going to keep from this list?

It's awesome. We need 20 players to fill our roster, but also have 4 bench spots. So if a player is available and you have the roster spot and salary available, he can be yours. What's great about it is the different approach people can use. I chose a youth approach. Trying to get the players that will the best in 2-3 years while I still can.
Galchenyuk, Barkov, Toffoli, Scheifele, S. Jones. I chose to fill my roster with youth and low cost and fill it with higher paid, in their prime player.
Lots of thinking, risk taking, salary managing stuff. Pretty intense.

Sounds like a great keeper league.

I like you idea of going very young and then nabbing the all stars in their prime - that's the way to go!!

Anthony Mantha just got hurt for 2 months, odds are he wont be in the NHL this year unless its for a call up stint for a few games, but I think he will be an excellent goal scorer for years to come - keep an eye if you can draft him at some point

He is for sure a guy I will keep my eyes on. I don't think he will get drafted since he is injured, but he is definately worth picking up at some point of the year. Matter of being fast enough to pick him up at the right time.

Niskanen 39 points - no Letang last year helped him get more points IMO
Burns 41 points - he may be playing more D this year than wing/D

We're only allowed to Keep guys for 3 years. So Mackinnon has another 2 years for me. That's a no bainer.

I'll probably keep Holtby too because I'm a sucker and also there really ins't too many goalies option from 2006 onward, get starting time.

Ok thanks you probobly hate all these questions but it's nice to have different opinions before you make a decision.

One last one. Trouba or Rielly?

If your league counts hits and pims I would draft Trouba, though I expect Rielly to outscore Trouba by a decent margin.
