Nice blog as usual Bill. Too bad G got hurt, I would love to see a Giroux-Schenn-Voracek first line and a Couter-Simmonds-Reid second line. Hopefully this all works out by the start of the season. It is breakout time for Schenn and Couter, hoping they can make the next step.

The concern I have with Giroux's injury is that if it's a groin, those can be tricky. Hope it doesn't turn into something that nags him all year long.

If one is into omens or bad signs, it doesn't get much worse than an injury to the one guy who is totally irreplaceable in the organization.

Agreed
I really hope they are cautious with this. If they think its a 2 week injury, I'd rather they give him 3 or even 4 weeks of careful rehab before he returns.

I'd rather him mis the the first few games of the season than be in and out of the lineup all year with recurring issues.

Really think its just a precaution with G, especially when you see the way players like Crosby, Malkin and Doughty arent reporting to training camp likely to prevent injuries like this from happening.. With Timonen out, Giroux will need to take over as Warrior of this team.

Plus... Im making the drive for the home opener so G had better be healthy!

The Giroux news is bittersweet. Fortunately it will only be two weeks, but what a buzzkill to start training camp.

Regardless I'm so ready for the season to start! Simply being in significantly better condition can go a long way in making this team better than last year.

I just hope that some of these guys who really pushed themselves on the conditioning front over the summer haven't become more injury prone as a result in the early going.

You gotta think flyers are being cautious with g. If it was something serious u think they wouldn't put a time frame on it esp one as short as two weeks.

I hope everyone is correct about the Flyers just being cautious with Giroux. And it is better now than if it happened opening night. I just don't wanna see them get buried out of the gate again

what you mean all teams don't lose their best defenseman and their star captain before all of 15 minutes into camp ?

i feel like the rest of this script writes itself... instead of opting for early season surgery the injury nags him all year, flaring back up just before the playoffs, bounced in the first round.

wash, rinse, repeat.

This is what I am worried about as well. I remember vividly how Briere took forever to shake that groin abdomen issue a few years back. I'm hoping it's not as serious as that one.

Everyone wanted to see Vinnie with Jake. Why not put Vinnie in Gs spot?

I have the same pessimistic view because of the luck this team seems to have. I want to believe that G will return healthy before opening night, and that Kimmo will return in January, but it never seems to play out that way for us....

Don't think kimmo will play another NHL game. Hopefully G just tweeked his groin, but it seems unlikely. It's not like yesterday was the first time he's skated since the end of last season. I would always tweek my groin muscle during the first skate of the season, but I'm sure G has been skating all summer. Groin, abdominal, hip flexor...all sound like the kind of thing that will nag him until he gets it fixed. Time for the young guys and Vinnie to step up at center.

Its not the worst thing if Giroux is ineffective and/or injured all season long. It really affects nothing in the long run except for the coaches. In fact it's exciting to think of possibly being in the Mcdavid/Eichel hunt. It happens all the time in sports where very good teams face a rash of injuries and have really bad years. Think the 4-12 falcons last year. They look like a formidable team again this year with the better part of the team healthy, looks like they are going to sandwich a 4-12 years with a 13-3 year and maybe another great year this year.

I don't want it to happen but if things aren't looking good its better for it to get real bad.

Because G will start the season with the 1st line so why not let everyone else stay with their linemates instead of jumbling everything up.

Whatever they case may be, I just hope it doesn't cause G to get off to a slow start. He is the straw that stirs the drink and the better he and the Flyers play in Oct and Nov the less nail biting we will be doing in March and April.

Also is anyone else weary of a MDZ/Luke Schenn pairing?

Not yet. I think MDZ is going to surprise. Schenn should get more minutes by default this season and history tells me he plays better when he gets more minutes.

Not at all as a 3rd pairing. I'm surprised and slightly concerned about the mobility of the Streit/Grossman pairing. I can just see other teams forwards chipping it in and winning the race as the strategy against them all game

I agree, I think MDZ/Schenn has potential to be an excellent 2nd pairing. Now if they could just find someone better than AMac to pair with Coburn on the top unit.

I do think you will see Grossmann paired with Coburn on the PK and late in games when protecting a lead, but they could still use one more really good all around dman.

Yeah, I'm hoping that MDZ/Schenn can step up and be a 2nd pair. I would really like to only use Streit/Grossmann against 3rd and 4th lines at ES. Though I have no prob with Grossmann on the 1st unit on the PK.

As you say, maybe this will work out really well for Vinny. I still think he has some in the tank if properly used at centre.

Why do you think mdz will rebound? Motivated by a new contract? I just worry that there has to have been a reason that he was not re signed.

I think AMac and Coburn will be a good top defensive pairing at 5 on 5. I will definitely prefer Streit over AMac on the top PP though.
