I would think Boychuk would have to agree to a long term contract before the Oilers would make that deal if they even wanted to.

Yeah....that's a horribly short sighted deal for Edmonton. Why not just wait until JB is a free agent? also, like u said, were not giving up on a 20 yr old Yak just yet.

Do we need Boychuck long term? Love the player but he is getting to the age where you have to expect a decline will be coming in the next few years.

When has a 1st overall gone for essentially a second pairing d man, on his ELC? I really like Ty, but this suggestion is asinine on many levels.

Would you do Ericsson and Boychuk for Eberle and a late pick? Would anyone do that?

No. Centre Depth... Not another Left Winger

You also need top 4 D and the Bruins don't have centres to spare.

I would probably do it if there was a clause where MacT got to talk extension with Boychuk prior to the trade. Do keep in mind that I have a boner for Eriksson, so this likely plays a fair deal into my decision.

I like Eriksson as well. He killed it with the Sedins at the Worlds a couple of years ago. I was hoping Benning would go after him. Seems like there was trade potential there.

Yeah I agree. Boychuck only has about 1-3 seasons left as a top pair D before he starts to reach the 3-4 status

He brings an element I see the Oilers sorely lacking in the top-6. With the additions of Pouliot, Purcell, and Perron over the last 2 years, the team has addressed some of it's needs up front, but I believe they're lacking another 2-way workhorse. I see Eriksson as that guy.

Hall- RNH- Perron (top line Vs. top line)
Eriksson- Arco- Purcell (big wingers support not-so-ideal 2C against secondarys)
Pouliot- LD- Yakupov (soft minutes line)
Hendricks- Gordon- Lander (defensive heavy-lifting)

Fayne- Petry
Nikitin- Boychuk
Ference- Schultz
Aulie
(allows Marincin, Klefbom, and Nurse to stay down)

That would just be grand

Yak for Boychuk would go down as one of the worst trades in Oiler history

That could potentially be a pretty deadly third line. I think I like your 2D better than your 1D though. If Nurse could somehow crack the top 6 at training camp the D would be fairly respectable.

I wonder if there is a hockey mind anywhere in the NHL who values Boychuk that high? I just fail to see the value from the oilers perspective

I think Eberle is a more realistic target as brought up by some of the Oilers faithful. (still a premium to get him, but can't deny his worth)

Lucic, Bergeron, Eberle would be a killer top line

My stance one those D pairings is to keep them all relatively even for minutes. It's essentially like having three 2nd pairings (assuming Schultz takes a step forward). Keep 'em all around 16 minutes at evens and then divvy up the special teams like so:

1st PP: Boychuk or Nikitin (I want a big shot to make PKers respect it opening up more space for the young guys down low)
2nd PP: Schultz (allows Yak to be the focal point of the 2nd unit)

1st PK: Petry and Fayne
2nd PK: Boychuk and Ference
All the while occasionally subbing Nikitin in to rest one of the older guys

This whole Oilers team is built of winning by committee. Whether it be 3 scoring lines, 3 2nd parings, or two potential starting goalies, it all comes down to balance.
