Good morning, folks! Insomnia means one thing: Think about hockey!

Dustin Penner is a guy whose conditioning has always been said to be poor, so I would be surprised if he were invited to the camp of a team that, by all reports, has been mandated to be in elite condition for camp.

Ryan Malone...I can't speak to the drug thing. He just looked like a spent hockey player to me, for the better part of two years now. Don't think there is anything left in the tank.

100% agree with you. Malones problems extend much further back than this incident and Penner would be gassed on his first shift and useless the rest of the game.

Pass on both of these flotsam/jetsam.

I see no harm inviting them to camp. I agree, it is a long long shot for them to add anything to the team, especially without limiting minutes to young players. However, if one of them can show chemistry on the top line with G and V, then a Setoguchi like contract is a fine roll of the dice. Again, you lose nothing inviting them and gain the chance they could impress. Only gain, nothing to lose. Why not?

An additional thought is that you could even gain by cutting Penner for conditioning reasons as a example to the other players. Opportunity abound IMHO.

That's how I feel. Might as well as use the tryout. If they don't seem to keep up with the others or just can't gel with any of the lines then you thank them and let them go.

Not sure I'd expect much from Penner or Malone. Really not sure I see the benefit of inviting them. I'd rather see the young players get the attention in camp and opportunity to make the team.

If they invite anyone, rather see it be a younger guy like Jamie McBain or Rafael Diaz .

I would pass on those guys as well. However, I have heard that Chad Larose wants to get back into the NHL, so that might be interesting. He was gritty, and seems determined at this time. I wouldn't mind seeing what he would bring to the table. Maybe sign him to a 2-way deal if he does well? I also hear that Nino Niederreiter is still negotiating with the Wild. That might be a wing option for G. He has speed, size, and is willing to go to the net.

If they invite either one of these guys to camp, it would make me wonder if they offered Setoguchi a 750K offer because he would have been worth the chance IMO.

I'd much rather have him than Malone or Penner.

No question, unless Hextall has a deal up his sleeve. Setoguchi could have put 20 goals and for 750K that is a good deal......unless they view his defensive game as a major weakness.

I have been a big proponent to signing Seto.. I really thought his speed could have been utilized well on the wing for the Flyers... $750k is what Rinaldo signed for..

One of Penner or Malone might surprise. If they were still solid signings, they'd have roster spots somewhere. They both have some good size which the Flyers could use on the wing but it would take a serious comeback of the year type season for either to play on one of the top two lines.

Last year's training camp was a disaster and too many players may have been an issue IIRC. I cannot reveal my source for Malone problems but they may have been commented on during his Pens years. The idea for this year's camp was to focus on in organization players.

No doubt. If the Flyers are looking for speed on their lines they definitely would not fare too well on the top lines. They could be used on the fourth line with Laughton and Rinaldo. That would be a goon squad

Other then saving a few bucks, there's no real benefit to the Flyers to sign him to a 2 way deal.
