If he is going to be a free agent, then why does a team have to surrender a second round pick?

Hey Garth,

Do you think it is worth it to give up #31 (assuming they finish dead last) in the draft next year for Hayes? I am on the fence about it.

On one hand, the Sabres do have tons of picks this year (2105 draft) (3 1st and 2 2nds) so giving up the potential #31 pick could be fine for a strong player.

On the other hand, it is said to be a very talented draft and even for the currecncy of a trade, I might want to hold onto the pick, to help get to #1 overall if needed.

I dont want to do too much to lose that shot at finishing last and I don't know that Hayes would want to sign an entry level deal and just play in Rochester all season, but that might be best for him, the Sabres and the player development going on in Rochester. I tend to lean towards signing him, but I have not watched tape on the guy, so I really know nothing more than what is written about the kid.

What do you think?

EDIT: I read this on another site "If Hayes does not sign with the Blackhawks, Chicago would get a compensatory second-round pick in the 2015 draft. The pick would be the No. 24 selection of the second round. " so that would tell me that the Sabres do not give up a pick, so then we should try to sign him for sure!

The largest issue here is how many players we have signed for the upcoming year, but Timmy will figure out what to do with some of them, I am sure!

He didn't dominate for 4 years, he dominated for 1 year with Johnny Gaudreau on his line. Still a low risk high reward pickup though in all areas, but not sure he's a stud, yet.

And yes, why the 2nd round pick? 1st i've heard of that one!

More like Johnny Hockey arrived last season and took over the centre position and attracted the defenders so Kev-O could clean up.

I guess his undiscplined Junior year including the drunken dump outside are now minor concerns.

They give up nothing they way I understand it.

He becomes a FREE agent as of Midnight Saturday, so there is no compensation to sign him...

A lot of misunderstanding here...I guess you all should have come over to the Blackhawk board where any regular would have helped you get a true understanding of the situation.

The pick is a compensatory pick, not from the team that signs him, just a free pick to Chicago.

Also, the deal doesn't have to be a a 3 year ELC. The limit in Hayes' case is actually 2 years.
