Seems like Ek thinks every team in the league has interest in Phaneuf. Doubtful. Awful contract.

but he can help a team as long as he is not the top D or the leader.

He's a good defensmen. He's a really good defensmen.

Garth Snow had a great offseason for us. Most of the non-HockeyBuzz NYI fans (the ones who can actually argue a point and now blow up over the internet) think Garth had an excellent summer and is a top 4 defenseman away from having a career summer for this team.

He addressed and added legitimate goaltending with Halak and Johnson
Solidified our top-9 by adding Grabovski and Kulemin
Increased competition at camp this fall by 10-fold...now Bailey, Grabner, and some of our youth realize they aren't shoe-ins for positions this year...they have to PROVE THEIR WORTH with the depth we have.

The only short-fall for Garth was addressing our defense. There still 2.5 months left for him to make a move and we have 26 players under 1-way contracts...something will happen during training camp/pre-season...

Lets relax on the NYI for the rest of the summer Ek...nothing will happen until September/October with them.

A really good defenseman? Don't kid yourself. The guy commits turnovers like Mike Weber. Guys worth a max of $4.5 mill a season. No more, no less.

To continue...we have AMAZING depth upfront...most believe we're going into the season with...

Nelson - Tavares - Okposo
Strome - Grabovski - Kulemin
Lee - Nielsen - Grabner
Bailey - Cizikas - Clutterbuck

Extras: Conacher, Martin, McDonald

Frans Nielsen can easily center 20 other teams 2nd line with ease. Having him on the 3rd line is a blessing....he will play shutdown minutes and still produce 40-50 points.

Hamonic - deHaan
??? - Hickey
Reinhart - Visnovsky

This is where we need a top-4 defenseman. Hickey and Vis play very well together, but having Reinhart play with a solid veteran is a better idea. Plus with Vis getting older, its best to reduce his minutes and teach Reinhart and destroy the PP.

Hickey is a small puck mover so we need a sold shutdown, crease-clearer (ala Boychuk in Boston - whom which many NYI would like to see)

Kulemin isn't a top 6 player bud. 3rd liner at best. Grabovski is an average 2nd liner. Don't get your hopes to high. Only real thing that's been really improved is the goaltending on your team. Defense is still a major problem. Offense will always be good with Okposo and Tavares. Also although goaltending was upgraded they've got a goalie who's never reached 30 wins in his career not even on a stacked, top defensive team like the Blues.

Funny you should say that. Subban Kieth Chara Karlsonn all commited more turnovers than dion last year.

Edit: so does Doughty, Markov and Hamuis, voyonov, Seabrook, Ehroff, Hjaralmson

No offense, but you are nuts if you think Martin is sitting down and Bailey is taking a shift on 4th line in his place. Not happening. Bailey will get traded before that happens. If Bailey doesn't get traded, you will see him on Franz's wing and Lee back at the Bridge since he has a 2 way deal. Besides, you listed too many forwards for the Isles to carry anyway. Three fwds on the taxi squad is 1 too many if you are having 2 dmen as well.

As for the D, we are actually 2 top 4 dmen away from being a team that gets out of the first round. deHaan-Hamonic pairing is fine. I think you are right that Viz-Reihart start the season together. However, Hickey sucks. He's just brutal. Takes too many chances jumping up on plays and his partner gets hung out to dry for it. He will not get playing time of Strait who I'm no fan of either. I don't see Garth bringing in 2 top 4 dmen, but that is what we need. That said, look at what we have on LI for Dmen- Viz, Brennan (1 way deal-he's on roster), Hamonic, deHaan, Strait, Carkner (that's 6 dmen on 1 way deals), on 2 way deals we have Donovan (Bridge), Hickey, Czuzman (Bridge). That is 9 dmen- 4 of whom are legit nhl dmen on a good team- Viz, deHaan, Hammer, Reinhart. The rest are AHL guys who hope to hang on as a 7th dman. We got holes on this roster and they are on the blueline and 1st line wing. I know everyone thinks Nelson will fill that, but until he does, we have a hole there too.

I actually at this part. Sound advice coming from a fan of a team that will be lucky to even get 25 wins.

That's because he knows he gets hits by mentioning a Toronto player. Guess leafs fans are getting to know this hence only 18 hits.

By extras I meant expendables...not the press box...

I agree we could use 2 top-4 defensemen but going in with adding just 1 would still get us into the playoffs...

deHaan - Hamonic
Boychuk - Hickey
Reinhart - Visnovsky

That looks pretty damn good.

Kulemin is not a "third liner at best". He is a great third liner who doesn't shoot/score enough to be top 6. He was probably my favorite player. Always felt better when kuli was on the ice. It's going to be weird seeing him in Islanders sweater
