Even if they decided to trade him, it was probably still better to sign him first (I don't think they will trade him).

"I think a lot of people need to understand that arbitration isn't always a negative process. It can be a positive, as well, and I really saw that it was. I saw it as a positive step for the process."

If Subban got 9M, he was probably asking for 10+ and Habs were offering 8. I don't get why the fact the deal was reached this late is pinned solely on Bergevin's head, while Subban and (especially) Meehan get out of it Scot-free.

Take the phaneuf 7 and the Gleason buyout and you have almost the same cap hit as subban

Toronto fans can stopped writing about Subban coming to TO in 2 years

Glad Bergevin finally signed Subban to a long term contract

Probably not. Doesn't look like the sharpest tool in the shed.

Do you think I did? I stand by every single thing I said on Friday. I was adamant that if this thing amounted to a one-year settlement decided by the arbiter, that was a gross failure and some real bad business. To me, there were only two options after the arb hearing: Sign him to the deal he wants or trade him. There was no, let's re-evaluate in 6 months. No, let's sign him next summer. There was no point of return from where arbitration would've taken them had the ruling come down.

Someone came up to me this weekend and said, "I think Bergevin's a genius," and then said "you see!". Nothing genius about it. They could've signed him on Friday to the same deal he signed on Saturday. They made a play and the play failed and hurt both sides.

And, as I mentioned in my blog, it's disappointing we haven't heard from Bergevin. Because he should be trumpeting this new deal and reinforcing the idea that this was all just tough business. That will inevitably happen, but if you think he didn't take some of this personally as well, you're deluded.

I agreed with every word that came out of Brian's mouth on Friday, and his blog thereafter. All of it. He was 1000% right.
