Matt Karash: Brett Bellemore signing multiple layers deep

I thought it was a good deal.

First love the deal. Second love Francis letting him walk. Third he has trade value at that price if someone else ends up with Hainsey in the second pairing and he ends up not being a regular. There are obviously other signings we would've all liked to see happen, but in his first year I don't blame Ronnie for making low profile signings. This is a good start to what I think will be a more consistent era in canes hockey.

Jay Harrison will be traded. Either alone or packaged with something/someone for another bottom 6 player.

I must say I'm totally disappointed in the Canes' signings and the reluctance to spend money on a very important part of any team, the D. Of course, I'm not privy to the assumed constraints our new GM is under, but when you see other teams, like TB, WAS, DAL making both small and big deals to improve their teams, you can only scratch your head.

The Bellemore signing is solid and a bargain. Yes, thats the problem, bargains don't improve teams, only temporary stop gaps.

Here's hoping Hayden Fleury develops into a top D- man. I know not to rush his progress, but hell what options do the Cane's really have in the here and now.

Carolina has the 19th most expensive defense in the league.

More expensive that San Jose, New Jersey, Toronto, Dallas, Montreal, Colorado, Nashville...

Hey Matt, hope your having an awesome summer! With Ward still around who do you think will be the number one goalie for the new coach? I realize whoever plays best will take over number one but in the eyes of Canes fans who is the number one at this point in the off season?? For the record most still think it is Ward's to lose again although I am rooting for Khudobin. Any thoughts anyone?

I'd be surprised if many think Wardo is better than Dobby...(but there is a huge difference of opinion about the entire team's skill level, so ???), that said, i feel Ward (when healthy) is still a quality goalie, but maybe his injuries are chronic... i'm not in a position to say, one way or the other!
As for Bellemore, i think Ronnie either is really smart, or very lucky that someone didn't call his bluff and sign him! Several teams out there could use him in their top 6, but it's likely that some teams don't have as good a handle on bottom pairing defensemen's comparative quality level...especially in the other conference.

Khudobin is the starter as that was not even a competition last season and as for the team not spending a little more money well Ward and Liles contract's has them in a pickle and I hope Hayden Fleury pans out as Calgary offered to take Ward for the Canes pick so If Fleury bust's that will be baaaad as getting rid of Ward's cap hit would've filled many holes on the team and yeah some will say giving up a 7th pick??? Well Imo getting $6.8m in cap space is a lottery itself!

This year's roster reek's of rebuild for next year to get Marc Staal which is the worst kept secret in the NHL along with Ward and Liles having only 1 year left on there deals the may just be movable next year so I guess we fans suffer another bad year and with moving out Liles and Ward the team should have PLENTY of cap space to upgrade the team and only Sekera and Tlusty being the only UFA's of Value well Sekera so far unless Tlusty can over come being the invisible man again this season.

Imo the front office is trying for McDavid but without saying so and If you look at the rosters around the NHL they just might get him. RF not being able to move Ward sealed the deal or lack there of.
