Good team player. He'll be liked in Buffalo, and will be good to have around the kids.

I don't think it's any mystery why he was traded. First and foremost a spot had to be opened up for at least one of the three kids in Hamilton. Secondly Emelin needed to be moved back to the left side, so that meant a left handed D needed to be traded. Obviously wasn't going to be Markov, which meant Gorges was the odd man out. Nothing to do with him, just the way it all shook down moving forward.

Gorges got traded because Bergevin knew he had to sign Eller at 3+M$ and Subban around 10m$. That leaves the team with approximately 500,000$ under the salary cap. Thats not doing any good if you want to counter an hostile offer for Subban. He would have been forced to trade or worse buyout one of the following Budaj,Moen,Bourque in order to couter an offer. And you are still less than a million$ under the roof.
Then next year, you have to sign Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Tinordi and Beaulieu with what we hope to be a big increase to the salary cap along with the 3m$ freed from the end of the Budaj and Weaver contracts.
Instead he traded Gorges to the Sabres who had the best offer aside from the Maple Leafs who allegebly* were giving up Lupul in the trade.
Then M.B signed Gilbert who should do very good work too for less $ plus he is right-handed and giving us a upside on the second pair of the PP.
There is still somewhat of a manuverability * with the cap and no buyouts are on the horizon.
It is a mere adjustment to the teams play giving up slightly on defence to improve aggresiveness on the rush and use the speed to is best.
Losing the person is another thing, everybody loved Gorges, and he was all-habs. But as he said, it is business.

How does that make sense? They signed Weaver and Gilbert in the offseason. So technically they added one defenseman.

Talk of an Amnesty buyout during the 2014 playoffs on gorges?
Why do you make this poop up?

Habs used their 2 compliance buyouts almost right out of the gate on kaberle and Gomez

Weaver was already here.

Emelin needed to be moved back to the left, that's why Gilbert was brought in. If Emelin on the right was viable going forward Gorges would still be here.

In terms of in and out from last year.

Out
Cube
Gorges
Murray

In
Gilbert
Beaulieu/Tinordi

I started to notice Gorges in the 2010 playoffs. Kid was a monster.

Glad he is here, and it's nice to actually see some Canadiens fans saying nice things about him. I think he is just what Myers needs.

I will say he doesn't have quite the same effectiveness to his game anymore. But he's still a solid player, and his shot blocking is as good as ever. The fact that he gives it 100% every night makes up for any decline in his ability.

Good to hear. Thanks for the info. Full out effort is something that'll rub off on our young kids.

Welcome to Buffalo...a team on the rise! Just need to get through the 2014-15 season while building the right culture...a high compete level every night...and each player becoming accountable to the team.
I think he will be invaluable to the kids on the D as their mentor, just what we needed.
The fact he shunned TO is icing on the cake...it will serve the Sabres well knowing that he has fire in his stomach playing against the Laffs and the Habs.
Sabres have had a much better off season then anyone expected...now I can't wait for.the 2015 Draft!
Go Sabres!
