Probably come down to taxes.

The Canadian teams are really working on an uneven playing ground. It seems like no free agents want to sign in Canada. The primary reasons have to be media, weather and taxes. Taxes being the most important factor.

I think the league needs to address this at some point, although I can't see Bettman being too concerned with having all the Canadian teams handicapped.

How can you exclude the fact that Bobby Ryan has openly said he wants to play for the flyers and with Claude giroux. He wants to play for the team he loves growing up and closest to his home. At least have some mention about that since may try to sign with us

Likely between the Senators and his hard-on for Philly IMO

Ryan lived in Cherry Hill, literally only separated by the water from Philadelphia and has been enamored with Philly since the Ducks. It's always been one of those buyer beware things

Ryan concedes he'd love playing on a line with Flyers star center Claude Giroux, who finished third in the league in scoring last season with 93 points and added 17 points in 10 postseason games.

I think this year the week Canadian dollar is an issue, but I think the debate about Taxes is overrated.

Montreal players pay the most taxes, but all 3 California teams pay more than Ontario based players. Calgary and Edmonton are where players are the least taxed.

The cost of living in NYC and LA is much higher than other places, yet they seem to be doing OK signing or retaining talent, yet Edm and Calgary can't sign crap.

Anyway, the Canadian dollar this year hurts, but Taxes is just an excuse.

I would trade him to Philly. Tell Philly, straight up trade for Simmonds - DONE!

I would consider a package deal of Read, 2015 1st, good prospect....

Either way, if he doesn't sign before the season starts, he has to go, before the season starts! Cant have this hanging around all year... Most definitely cannot risk him getting hurt and walking for nothing.

Also, NHLPA doesn't like when players take home town discount to play in there city.

I think it is absurd canadians players don't want ti play in Canada.

How can a league work when all players want to play for LA or SJ or Ana?

I believe all contracts are paid in USD?

I guess when talking about California, the lack of ridiculous media and the weather are probably factors ... not to mention the teams success.

I believe Florida has the lowest tax situation?

Travis Yost - firmly feeding Ottawa Senators fans anxiety in every article.

Even last season when we were cruising along and having the pesky Sens season every article was "this is going to implode soon'

Time to turn the page - let's be optimistic this is a playoof team - Montreal, NYR, Philly - they all look to be about on the same level as us on paper - let's wait until game 1 to see what we have

If I'm Hextall, I'm content to wait for 7/1/15 to take a shot at Ryan.

Ottawa needs a big change in optics right now. There's no better scenario than Ryan having a big year and re-signing.

Do you blame them?

I'm Canadian and I wouldn't want to play here. There happens to be 7 Canadian teams in Canada and all 7 of them are dysfunctional.

But yeah, why would players want to play on competitive teams in sunny California?

It would be pretty weak if we allowed Ryan to test FA market. I am hoping that the years of savings mean that we can afford to pay Ryan his worth. Note that EK65 is on a ridiculously affordable contract (contrast to what PK is going to make and it will make you sing BM's praises).

My fear is that this cheapness era will be protracted and that ownership will not be ready to open the pocketbook when these players start to hit their prime. A frank discussion with ownership is required NOW so that we can extract value through a trade if this is the case.

I love Bobby Ryan and would want to have him as part of the core going forward. That said, if Melnyk says we won't pay him more than $6M per season, we need to trade ASAP so that we can get something back. At the deadline, other GMs know that we'll be backed into the corner. This could spiral into an even worse situation. my anxiety levels are hiiiiiigh!

But your team did stumble, and Philly is still better regardless of how you want to word it.
