Ed Stein: Two Rejoin Flock and Thoughts on Heatley
Analysis of the Dany Heatley signing.

Two things:
1) Heater for that money is a no brainer. Even if you only get 10 minutes out of him a night. Why not? Heck if he is horrible $1M sitting in the press box is no big deal.
2) "The Flock" is a horrible team nickname.

That is all

I think it's all going to depend on how well he likes the coaching staff and his team in general. Heatley was well liked by coaching staff and players here in Minny and that was reciprocated by Dany even when he was demoted all the way down to the 4th line as well as healthy scratched for the first time in his career last season.

But we all know that Heater has pretty much been a career long mal-content when it comes to playing time and minutes despite being on his best behavior here in Minny. Granted he was making over $6 million more last season with the Wild then he will be this season with the Ducks, so maybe there's a good chance he falls back into his old ways. Only time will tell, and if that holds true, chances are he isn't going to hold much interest if he's playing diminished minutes somewhere on a nobody line where he isn't given ample opportunity to score.

Who knows, maybe it works out, but after watching Dany over the better part of the last 4 seasons, I'd say the chances of a come back or even realistic chance to positively help the Ducks to a championship are minimal at best.

Sure he's a take a chance on me type player for a cool million, but he's still very much high risk/low reward if you ask me.

From the play I saw from him the past few years, he's a low risk, no reward type.

Kinda like Gaborik last year. Hopefully he's motivated and playing for his next contract. If not, he's dumped like Penner was.

Great signing, low risk high reward. Even if he ends up being "past his prime and a fourth line player" that's a heck of a fourth line player for only a million bucks

Plus he'll move up once Kesler gets hurt

I don't see Heatley helping, since you guys already have two of the best offensive players in the league with Getzlaf and Perry. At 1mil for a year though, hard to argue.

Play Heatley minimal ES minutes, but give him PP time and it makes sense.

He's going to have a big bounce back in Anaheim, stick him with a skater like Cogliano or Etem, or with the big boys Getzlaf and Perry. He's got something to prove.

cheechoo had 50 in 06 and 40 in 07......heatley is closer to cheechoo now then the player who scored 50 eight years ago.

that being said, for 1 mil, why not take the chance. worst case, he sucks, ducks waive him and send him to the AHL (which i'd love.......won't deny being a heatley hater )

My Red Wings signed Dan Cleary for $1.5 million... The Heatley deal looks pretty darn good.

I think that is what they are banking on, but he has to come in in top condition

I'm saying it now; you guys will win the cup this season. I think you are one bottom six player away from being the favorite in the West, especially since the Canucks and Sharks are in free fall mode. Your only competition is Chicago and LA. St. Louis is right there as well.

Not even.. if waived I see someone picking him up for sure. Especially a team like the Wings or Boston.. need some bottom 6 depth.

Pop quiz for you: Which was the last team to win the Cup without a #1 defenseman?

I can tell you who was the last team to win without an elite goalie (Chicago last season).

But without a #1 defenseman? I think it was 2008-09 Pittsburgh. But there's no way that team wins in today's NHL.

People saying he's low risk are completely wrong. He's a high risk from the stand point that his sloth like movement and high turnover rate is more than enough to sabotage any lines % of success.

Sure he's going to pot some goals, but the majority of them are going to be scored during losing efforts when games are out of reach and during garbage times. Just like the majority of the goals he scored for the Wild last season were.

He was reported as saying he came into last season with the Wild in arguably the best shape of his career. So that should tell you something.

You don't think Fowler is a #1? I think he's ready to make the jump.

I like this signing just as I like the havlat deal. Kind of thought heater might get more though but for either guy you can only.win with that type of money

That's the key. Is he going to make the jump. He's been getting better every year so there's a chance, but right now I'd put him as a top 4 level only.

Yep, the money is great for a take a chance player(s), but in the end it's still wasted cap space for two players that will likely not contribute to the greater good of their respective teams.
