Although these players we'll deserve this amount of money, I'm not sure why they don't get more of a getzlaf/perry deal.

I understand the have 1 more cup than them but 1million off the books for each can make a big difference down the line.

Hope the cap goes up a lot..... Would suck to have to dismantle key elements because of it. Good players equal huge contracts. We will see.

Time to celebrate. The Hawks are re-signing franchise cornerstones heading into their prime instead of packing their bags, ala Roenick & Belfour

Who is going to be sent packing John ?

There's a chance if some of our good D prospects pan out. Need to get value somewhere in the roster.

With these contracts I'm just praying Kopitar doesn't reach above 9.

Dunno, but to me, the next couple of years (and maybe this summer too) will be the true test of this front office. They've had a lot of gimmes since 2009-10.

Now, success will be a lot harder to maintain on the ice.

They'll get more because they are signing their contracts when the salary cap has risen dramatically since the Getzlaf/Perry signings. The market rises as the salary cap does. Period.

If cap goes up 5, hawks goes up 9 with Kane and Toews, they would be out 4.

Kruger +1
Saad Bridge +2

Oduya -3 (I assume Rozy gone this year to get to cap)
Versteeg -2

They need to get another 2 out, even if I'm off a few million losing Sharp nets you 6.

Not sure that would be dismantling and JJ is correct that some of the youngsters have to step up, but I believe that was always the case.

Everyone raves about Anaheim, they resigned Perry and Getzlaf and still signed Kesler, they won't be any good if first contract guys don't step up.

What's the Hossa Cap recapture going to cost the Hawks when he retires?

That would worry me as a Hawks fan. I'm surprised there was no talk of using an Amnesty on him. He's still a hell of a two way player, but how many years will he be? 2-3? Maybe.

I'm very surprised at how many people seem to be caught off guard by this. Regardless of the cap hits, this is a team that will be getting younger in the next two years and while it won't be the capocolypse of 2010, there will be a changing of the guard so to speak. This isn't something that just came about but something that has been talked about for a few years now.

However I'm confident in the Hawks FO because not only have they won 2 Cups in 5 years but they've done it with basically two completely different teams. Will it suck to see some long time guys go? Yes of course. But when you are a successful Cup winning team, this is the price you pay. Just ask Pittsburgh, Boston and the Kings who will have their own cap issues the next few years as well. That being said I'd rather be in that position then having to overpay marginal talent every July 1st and not winning sh!t.

$12 million would be catostophic, $10.8 million wouldn't be the best number, $9.5 million would be fine.

Assuming the cap goes up about $5 million next year, that will help cover one of Kane and Toews' increase and a bit more. The reality is that our team is in maintenance mode, we're not rebuilding or deconstructing. Stan needs to find a way to keep as many of our proven players while trimming the fat and losing those we can truly love without. For the next while I wouldn't expect any big names acquired at the trade deadline or on draft day. As JJ mentioned Stan will have to rely on youngsters filling the holes (which has worked well so far) or finding low cost free agents that can make an impact (ie Richards). Other teams will acquire new talent and close the cap, we have to hope that our non-core talent keeps improving so we stay ahead of the pack. One thing our team has that most others don't is familiarity, these guys know each other well and have played together for a long time, including time spent in Rockford. I think that goes a long way in helping a team come together.

JJ...in our opinion which forward prospect (not named Teravainen) has the best chance at being a regular NHLer?

This has been bugging me for awhile - the Hawks have been one of six teams rumored to be "in" on Brodeur. Granted, I think Brodeur is washed up and would be a terrible signing...

...but why would the Hawks even consider signing Brodeur? Raanta is locked up for the next two years and will not be going down to Rockford. Crawford is locked up long-term.

Could this be a clue - whether it be this summer or next - that Crawford is a potential cap-clearing trade target? Are they entertaining the idea of a Raanta-Brodeur tandem? I would not do it, but I don't see why else they would even be interested in Brodeur.

But depth has been their problem.
