I would heavily back a move of this nature...esp. With the potential of the injury bug hitting Martin again. Sad to see him go but this makes a lot of sense

Ehrhoff is good, could probably return to the 10+ goal 40 point player he was before Buffalo on Pitt
However he had some brutal games as a Sabre, and stretches where you wondered how he ever got a 40 million contract |

So why would someone trade for Martin if Ehrhoff was available as a free agent? |

Yeah because there would only be one team out there looking for a solid d-man of that caliber. |

Yea, but for this to work for Pittsburgh Ehrhoff would need to still be available. Not many teams are going to jump at the chance to help Pittsburgh land a free agent that they themselves are interested in. Unless somehow the Pens can swing signing Ehrhoff before trading Martin. It would be a gamble. |

Martin is important to the team's success. I would be willing to risk him walking after the season if it meant he was around to be part of another Cup run. |

Paul Martin is awesome, one of my favorite guys on the team but you can't continue to let good D men walk for free. Ehrhoff fills void just fine. |

Pitt can carry the extra salary over the offseason as long as they move Martin prior to the start of the season and get under the cap. Teams have already inquired about Martin only because he's a UFA after this season. Pitt didn't market him because they need his skill but this will open up that opportunity. It will all depend on who a team would want Ehrhoff or Martin.
Not too mention who Ehrhoff would prefer signing with. He may see more opportunity signing with Pitt so other teams won't be able to lure him anyway so settling for Martin is a great back up.

Erhoff was the PP quarter back for the Canucks in 2011. Since his departure they haven't really been able to get their PP to really click like it used to. He would make a fine replacement for Martin especially if we can get a piece or two by trading Martin. Nice article Ryan. |

Guess we find out tuesday |

I wonder if this will affect Nisk's signing since he was lucky to be the only real d-man option as a UFA this year. I tend to think he will still make his loot but a least theres another option out there now. |

Considering Paul Martin's NTC limiting possible destinations, and the cap crunch Pittsburgh would be under if they had both on the books, it's not like Pittsburgh has a great chance of bringing back much for Martin in the situation your suggesting. Especially when you consider that most teams with 5mil to spend on defensemen will have done it at the same time Pittsburgh is signing Ehrhoff.
Having very limited trade options plus those teams knowing you're forced to make a trade for cap reasons will bring back a better return than nothing for Martin; but not by much. |

Let me preface my statement by saying I'm a big Paul Martin fan. Think he is a hell of a player. That said, Ryan, this is a no brainer. Ehrhoff is younger; will be cheaper. He is a steady Dman, not great by any means, but steady. He also could help replace the loss of Niskanen as far as having a PMD. He does possess some offensive ability to pot 10-14 goals and 40-50 points possibly. He would be the point man on the power play.

Sign Ehrhoff and Goc. (Team Germany guys)
Trade Paul Martin for a good bottom 6 forward and a pick.
A question: I thought Martin had a NMC. Am I wrong? |

Ehrhoff would be a good signing anyplace he wants to play. He clearly didn't want to stay with the Sabres and his play and comments reflected that.

Vanek and Pomminville are levels below what Vancouver had. The Sabres forward group was below average even with those two. |

wander what erhoff thinks about the this franchise, penguins seem to be a very polarizing team, either love them or hate em. we might not have a snowballs chance in heck.
but either way, i love paulie, but as long as we have someone that is of a similar caliber for the same or less salary hit, im cool with it.
i just dont think it has a real chance of happening. and as long as we at least shop the rights to martin then we wont be losing him for nothin, you hear me JR? |

I agree, but that goes with what Murray said, Ehrhoff didn't do enough to make this decision difficult, he's good, nothing more |
