Todd Cordell: The New Jersey Devils Should Re-Sign Mark Fayne

What's even scarier is DeBoer seemingly ok and would like brodeur back

I think fayne won't be re-signed but zid will

I can see
Greene larsson
Sal Merrill
Zid gelinas/Harrold

Harrold will be the 6th dman rotating larsson and gelinas in and out

I don't see a reason to keep both Fayne and Zid. We need Larsson to have a bigger role. Allowing one of them to leave opens up a top 4 spot for Adam.

I have a feeling the roster will look almost identical to last season

Lets not kid ourselves. Lou will let one of fayne and Zid walk, an let one of sal and volch stay. It's stupid but I doubt Lou can stomach both buyin out volchenkov annd doing away with captain Salvador. We "need" to clear space after all. No easier way to do it than let a good player walk.

Lou almost always pays guys based on what they have done instead of what they will do especially with older players and that is asking for trouble as production can not only drop but drop off significantly in just one summer how was sal ever going to live up to that contract of three years at 36 are you kidding me like at what point does common sense kick in and you say well you are this age and declining why not pay them accordingly instead he gives the plug 3.6 or something which was just stupid the guy could clear waivers that's how worthless he is but yet him being in the line up is more important then a fourth overall pick we might never have again and sorry martysbetter I commented on your post but this isnt directed at you

I think fayne is a late bloomer he should stay for sure look at Greene he wasn't the player he is today at the age of 27 I think fayne will be just as reliable for us as Greene is and he is the perfect age not to young by any means and not to old he is a good fit to

Yes, I would resign Fayne. He is a solid 27 year old player.

Then I would resign Zids, buyout Volchie, buyout or trade even with retained salary Sal.

Go with

Greene-Fayne
Merrill-Zids
Geli-Lars
Harrold

Have Helgeson, Scarlett or Severson, they could call up fo a handful of games.

I would also potentially trade Larsson for scoring Forward. However that is a separate topic.

Lou should keep Fayne and let Zid walk & buyout Volchenkov.
If Lou can somehow trade Salvador then bring in another vet presence instead...
Lou knows what he's doing, and your team will be much better... count on that!!!!

I would be fine with bringing both back. Only reason for Zid is he can run a PP better than anyone we have.

I didn't read that article, but I am pretty confident that he didn't truly mean that. You've got to put yourself in his shoes. Deboer is a smart guy, and he's a lawyer. He knows how to answer questions to give the most politically correct answer possible. In this case he didn't have to be that smart to give the right answer. Some fans may not like it, because they'll rarely get an honest answer out of him, but he's just doing his job. I'll take him over Torts 1000 times out of 1000.

What happens if he says he doesn't want Brodeur back, and Lou re-signs him? Now you've got it on record that the coach doesn't want your legendary-face-of-the-franchise goalie back and now every time Corey starts both ends of a back-to-back you're dealing with reporters questioning his faith in Brodeur. And believe it or not, a large number of fans still think Brodeur is capable of being a solid NHL goalie. You do not want to insult one of the greatest players in the franchises history and alienate your fan base when you're fighting to keep your job. And if Brodeur retires and takes another role in the organization? That'd get awkward real quick.

It should be noted that he's also on record that having two "starting" goaltenders was not an ideal situation. That of course, was a response to what went wrong this past season.

Brunner
Ryder
Volchenkov
Salvador
Zidlicky
Harrold
Gionta
Josefson
Clowe
Brodeur
Other then that, though, we are rock solid.

Zidlicky has only grown on me, because he's only improved defensively. I wonder if someone could find the stat for defensive zone penalties, or "stupid penalties", but he did average less penalties than the lockout season, and he was pretty decent for us defensively, but brings a lot on the offense. 12 goals and 30 assists is pretty darn good for a dman, especially at his price! He's 37.. maybe a 1 year deal for 4 mil? I'd do that. Sign Fayne for 4 years/15mil or 3 years/12 mil.

I like Fayne and hope he comes back. So many teams out there would like a guy like that on their third pairing. I think Jersey better keep him before he finds out how much he's worth.

Fayne is a quality defensemen. Our situation on D would be resolved so easily if he can just dump volchenkov and Salvador.
