Obviously you are a big fan of this guy. I am too. I can tell you that his voice is a gift from god and that is his biggest asset. Foster Hewitt, Bill Hewitt, Danny Gallivan, Bob Cole and this guy have something that very, very few people have, a god given voice that makes a boring game exciting.

As players get bigger and bigger and faster, on rinks that are still built for the midgets in the 1940's , with the same dimensions, it takes an amazing voice like this guy, to make this pharmaceutical fraud of a game seem like real hockey.

I don't begrudge this guy, he is a delight to listen to, but I sure resent the brand of hockey that he is actually reflecting on.

Great write up. I remember when I first started following hockey and the Flyers in the mid 80s. Doc Emrick and Bill Clement (along with Gene Hart and Bobby Taylor on the radio when I couldn't get the game on PRISM or Ch. 8/57) were a magical team that got me instantly hooked on the sport. Doc had -- and still has! -- a way of making hockey not just exciting but personal. I always felt that he brought what made hockey great right into my living room. Obviously I'm biased as a hockey fan, but I can't think of another broadcaster in any other sport that has the same gift that Doc has. He's one of a kind.

I love hockey, I just resent that we are being forced to watch cramped hockey. The rinks were built for men about three inches under six feet tall. Now four inches over six feet is the norm, almost.

What has it created? Phone booth hockey, that any hockey purist can see is just pure crap. Talented players, but end result crap. Our group lobbied the NHL for years to go four on four, and they relented to overtime. And its ten times better than the other periods. The players love it, the fans love it, but the NHLPA will fight it tooth and nail because it eliminates jobs.

Five on five hockey, its hack and a chop in a telephone booth.

Nice write up Scoop. Congrats to Doc.

I feel that Gene Hart was the guy for me with that magic, who could turn the game into something special.

I like the guy who does the radio broadcasts for (dare I say it this as a Flyers fan)
the Pens. He is incredibly entertaining.
