great blog, Bill ... and a sobering breakdown of each players speed.

I might add that I feel the Flyers need QUICKNESS as much as speed. Too often they are beaten to loose pucks - not because the opposing player is faster - but because the opposing player simply reacts more quickly. I suppose some of that can be instilled by the coaching staff, but it would be nice to have a few players who naturally react quickly to a situation.

Also, I don't know if you were going to address it more in-depth, but the Flyers passing has to be among the league's worst. I watch these other playoff games and I see constant tape-to-tape passes, and I'm left wondering "why can't the Flyers do that?"

I have to disagree on a couple players. I think Adam Hall actually has very good speed going north-south. I also think Sean Couturier's skating greatly improved this season, and his speed is quite underrated.

Nice read.

If you want speed, Mason Raymond will be looking for a new contract. He might fit in a top 9 roll plus PP/PK.

From the Canucks, Hansen, Kesler, Higgins and Booth all have good speed and can be had if there's a fit and the price is right.

I would have any of Laughton, Couts, Read or B.Schenn on my team.

I don't think the issues with the Flyers was so much speed or defense but lack of secondary scoring. We needed Vinnie to be a 2nd threat on that second line to take some of the pressure off of Giroux. I think Simmonds & Schenn are great Complimentary players at this point but we needed someone who is going to draw attention. On paper Worked great but he is not the same player. We'd probably have been better off trying to get Jagr back.

I'm very interested in seeing if Ghost, Hagg, or Alt is ready to make the jump. In the meantime it sounds like Kimmo is thinking of returning next year.

On Ron Hextall becoming the GM in the future:
That's why he was brought in. He didn't come in to stay assistant GM forever, but that doesn't mean tomorrow. But I've got to sit down with Paul. It's really Paul's call.

What did you think of the job Paul Holmgren did, and will he be back?
Of course Paul will be back. Basically he's the head of our hockey operations. But the job that he did, I think was excellent. Not too many guys would have guts enough to fire the coach after three games.

- Snider

Doesn't really sound like he's trying to force Homer aside...

What if a team calls for permission to talk to Hextall about a promotion?
“You can always say, ‘No, I refuse to give you permission to talk to my employee.'" Holmgren said. "To me, if and when that happens - if somebody wants to talk to Ron Hextall about a general manager's opening, yeah. Is it the right thing to do? Yeah.”

- Holmgren

Doesn't really sound like Holmgren isn't letting Hextall leave...

Not really sure what press conference you're getting this info from.

I agree 100%! mason needed a 1.0 GGA to win the series. They were anemic on even strength goals.
I know alot of offense can come from a quick mobile D that can clear the puck and make a great breakout, but the offensive pressure was not there.

one more thought, The brass can't go to the media and say they were completely dissatisfied with the seasaon. unless you plan on blowing up the team, that is.

Also love the people on here who's answer is: "trade Lecavalier" Any GM in the league could have him for free, but who wants the price tag.

They definitely could use some speed. You can make up for a lack of speed by having strong puck handlers like the Bruins do. The Flyers don't have either of those though. Timonen streit and Mac are all decent puck handlers but none of them are great.

This team just needs more balance throughout the lineup

I wouldn't even take him for free.

All you need is one dumb GM to make the move. The rangers traded Gomez and got back McDonagh. If that's possible then anything is possible

Pull some quotes that suggest Snider is tiring of Holmgren

Yeah. It just hurts because they didn't need him. They didn't need another center for the next 5 years. They should have just kept Briere if they were going to sign a guy like VL

There's always room for a player like Lecavalier. Unfortunately this season didn't go so well, with a lot of factors involved.
