He is a good coach... Nashville- never had the players and remained competitive always... considering the players he had during his entire tenure...

Very good coach. Unfortunate firing. Probably won't be replaced with someone as good as he...

You may want to look at that 2006/07 team.

This reminds me a lot of the Lindy Ruff firing last year. It ended up working out well for Lindy as he is back in the post-season. I think Barry Trotz will have his choice of any job he wants this offseason. At the same time he seems to be a family man by all accounts and I could also see him taking a year off to spend more time with his kids.

Exactly. He should have been let go after that year IMO.

Agree. He will most likely take some personal time.

EDIT: per Preds site: Trotz has been offered a position within the organization’s hockey operations department and will consider his options before making a decision on the position.

It's a sad day, but this needed to happen for the Preds to take a step forward. Trotz is a good coach. And a great guy from all accounts. He will be missed around here.

It seems to me that Housley or Laviolette are the odds-on favorites for the job. I would be surprised if one doesn't end up behind the Preds' bench. Depending on which (or even some other candidate) Poile will need to fine tune the roster to match the style of his new coach. To me, the following players are untouchable, no matter the coach:

- Shea Weber (the captain & should be Norris winner)
- Roman Josi (gets better every year & with a great contract)
- Seth Jones (loads of potential on an entry level deal)
- Patric Hornqvist (Don't have to be Barry Trotz to love his grit)
- Craig Smith (he's going to be a legit top-6 guy in this league)
- Paul Gaustad (overpaid - but no one will take that contract)
- Erik Nystrom (decent value - locked in for several years)
- Colton Sissons (shown some promise & years left on entry deal)
- Calle Jarnkrok (proved he belongs here & good value)
- Viktor Stalberg (at $3MM & his production - who would take him?)
- Mike Fisher (I love Fish, but nobody's gonna pay him $4MM except the Preds)
- Gabby Borque (cheap energy guy - might as well keep him)
- Pekka Rinne (Pekka is, as Pekka does)

I also think it's likely that they hold onto Ryan Ellis, Mattias Eckholm & Nick Spaling in the RFA process. I doubt any of those players would bring a huge return in the RFA market, so it might be better to keep them. Quality mid-line talent for reasonable prices.

That brings you down to some of the question marks like whether to trade Colin Wilson? Do you buy out Clune? Carter Hutton has improved - does he get a new deal?

If the players above are truly "set" and Poile hangs on to his RFA's...then he just needs a couple of pieces. This group can score when they are turned loose - but they still lack that dangerious forward that other teams have to match up with. I'm thinking any new coach is going to want someone in there to give their team some offensive identity. If Poile can't get that done - he may be on the next train outta town.

when you don't make the Playoffs....there are no "untouchables". To good a team to blow up for sure....But some of those players on the list may not be back.

Always liked Trotz. Fantastic coach. I'm sure if he wants another job in the NHL, someone will hire him.

- Shea Weber (the captain & should be Norris winner): Can rebuild the team in 1 trade.

- Paul Gaustad (overpaid - but no one will take that contract): Cant pay a guy $4 Million for 10 goals. Trade for picks.

- Erik Nystrom (decent value - locked in for several years): The let Spaling/Borque walk

- Colton Sissons (shown some promise & years left on entry deal)
- Calle Jarnkrok (proved he belongs here & good value)

- Forsberg/Beck must play

- Viktor Stalberg (at $3MM & his production - who would take him?): I wonder what he will do not playing the majority of the year with Clune & Goose

- Mike Fisher (I love Fish, but nobody's gonna pay him $4MM except the Preds)

- Gabby Borque (cheap energy guy - might as well keep him): The let Nystrom/Spaling walk

- Pekka Rinne (Pekka is, as Pekka does)

It needs to happen...no point firing the coach while keeping the GM who thinks the same way Trotz does, otherwise Poile will just take the easy way out, promote within, not change the system, and the Preds will have to go through it all over again, sadly.

well if the guys on the Ottawa site get their way, Spezza will be gone...... Ottawa might take Mike back .......

I'm not for getting rid of Spezza, but if it happened - Fisher at 3LC, might insulate Turris and Zbad....

In my original post, I wrote about Ellis. He's an RFA. So, if the Preds got some kind of great compensation for letting him sign elsewhere - that would be a possibility. But I don't see the return for him being that great - so they will probably keep him. Ellis has grown on me (and probably lots of other Preds fans). I would be happy to keep him around.

I would think a top 4 of: Weber/Josi.....Jones/Ellis would be ideal going forward no? Jones makes up for Ellis lack of size, or am I thinking too much like a video game?
