Tough matchup against a very good Avalanche team

As you alluded to, Staal and Girardi was a hell of a tandem at one point and still would be had it not been for Mac stepping up + Staals concussion. I honestly don't expect a hiccup on the top D pairing. I think Staal steps up and shines and we will appreciate his game more in this situation. Its the ripple effect that is worrisome for me is Staal's absence on the second pairing, rather than Mac's on the first pairing.

Get well Jan...great write up and I agree with the cautious approach regarding McDonagh. We joke/marvel at the mans toughness but if it means finishing 3rd and having Mac completely healthy and no longer at risk of further injuring himself, I'll sign for that over finishing 2nd and not having him healthy at all until October. I'll take my chances. Given the rest of their schedule, I expect them to win enough games to force Philly to win BOTH games in hand.
