This isnt 2015's draft. No one is paying that kind of price for this years 1st. They will use it.

Next year I can see the number one pick getting some big offers.

I think you have to look in to a move like this if you're the Sabres. This draft isn't supposed to be anything special, so investigate any path that will make your team better.

Smart move! We all know the Oilers model does not work unless you are prepared for 15 years of futility

So let's see, The Sabre's want 2 good players in exchange for one good player. Sounds fair to me!

Better than the Leafs model and their 47 years of futility.

If anything I would start a bidding war between Edmonton and Florida for the 1st pick since both those teams need Ekbald and the sabres don't. If the haul is big enough it would be worth it. Especially if buffalo gets the isles pick this year.

just pick ekblad if you guys get the first and have a stacked D core in a few years, then go out and find a goalie (unless you think youre good with neuvirth) and you will be right on track

Say Edmonton has the 2nd and buffalo has the 1st what kind of package would you want to move down one spot? I'd be more interested in trading down as an Edmonton fan if only so oiler fans don't freak out when ekblad doesn't magically solve our defensive problems

Is there really a prospect who hadn't played any nhl games worth the first?

Obviously the lottery could change everything, but if buffalo has 1st, Edmonton has 2nd and Florida has 3rd, and Edmonton knew buffalo was willing to trade the 1st to Florida they would be willing to pay more to outbid them. Ekbald is the real prize for either team. So that would leave buffalo with 2nd or 3rd and maybe 4 if the islanders don't defer.

In all sincerity - why would a franchise do that? You take the highest ranked player, end of story! Mike Gillis tried that theory, draft older more "pro-ready" kids (with later picks), it didn't work at all, never do what Mike Gillis does because he's a fricken idiot!!

I dont think this is correct. Ekblad does nothing for Edmonton. We have Big young mobile Dmen in the pipeline already. Ekblad would not be on the Oilers roster next season.

That's an interesting question and very well could occur.

You'd essentially be guaranteeing Ekblad as your pick and am actually not so sure Buffalo wouldn't pick him first overall given how rarely that type of D man comes along at that age.

You'd obviously be giving up your 2014 first.....so what else, 2015 1st?(kind of steep), one of your prior years firsts(also kind of steep if I'm an oiler fan...

Most ridiculous statement of the year. Ekblad would be your best dman next year.

How rarely? He isnt even consensus 1st in a weak draft. Scouts are saying Chris Phillips comparable. Not Pronger/Doughty/Weber/Chara
