I still hate that 1998 deadline.

I don't see them making any major moves. The price for anything this team really needs is just too high and would create as many or more issues than there were previous to the trade. If course homer could fleece someone, but again don't see that happening.

Parity is killing the TDL fun.

There's only 7 teams in the NHL more than 3 points out of a playoff spot

The only move that I want to see is them trade downie for a solid 4th line guy.

Edit: And NOT a guy that the refs just get bored and call penalties on.

Steve Downie has no value. You couldn't get a handful of broken sticks for him.

No moves would be a good move this season. Lets wait until the off season and evaluate what you have and what you need. Nothing can be done this year that will make this team a true contender.

Downie was a key part of the 3rd line when the team started to get back on track in November. But since Christmas he's been god awful. No goals and 4 assists in 22 games, plus a truck load of bad penalties.

Trading him for a pick would improve the team right away.

2009: Acquired Dan Carcillo from Phoenix for Scottie Upshall and 2011 2nd round pick.

Ugh.

Agreed. I was okay with giving him a chance after the TDL to improve, but he's actually a negative on the team right now.

Look at last year when they acquired Mason for a pick. That is certainly a deal that has helped the Flyers. Never know what might materialize.

It's a shame. I just don't think that he's right. Something has affected his game.

I think that we could get a 4th line player for him to replace the spot that opens when raffl moves up to the 3rd line.

If not, do we have a guy in the AHL that could replace someone on the fourth line if we trade him for a 4th/5th rounder?

Trading Downie for a cough and a sneeze would be nice. It would also give McGinn a shot at the big club. I'm sure that he would add a much needed spark down the stretch to show his worth.

i wouldnt call it parity as much as i would call it a terrible points system. the extra point for OT losses and giving out 3pts for a game worth 2pts keeps teams close that shouldnt be close and creates a logjam of average teams.

exactly.....never say never. Never fully know what teams think about some of there own players. Some guys fall out of favor. ie Steve Downie here....
honestly unless you aquire Edler of Ehrhoff.....or maybe a Jake Gardinar in TO ...then the other names out there really don't make the D better. Up front they are deep unless Holmgren decides to add a rental scorer....But this team finally appears to want to protect the future.....then again that may change in the next 30 hours.

I wouldn't trade him.....your getting squat for him anyways....let him play his way out of the funk...he has shown he can contribute.
one thing about Downie is he can play on any line.

What about his game, aside from that short stretch, has shown you that he's capable of playing way out of a funk. He's actually been getting worse, and since the TDL, he's been even worse. I'd take any return for him. If we want a slow forward who won't win any board battles and will take stupid penalties, we can call up Newbury.

Shawn Matthias was one of those 2nd rd picks. He'd be a lot better if he had some decent talent around him.

I know it's been beaten to death, but I still don't understand their outright refusal to adopt the 3-point system used at all international events.

Tye McGinn and Ben Holmstrom will give you that big bodied grinder type. McGinn has had very moderate success in his cups of coffee.

A funk? A funk lasts about 3 weeks. He has been useless for going on 2 months. You are right, you won't get anything for him but to keep playing him is going to kill this team. He was lucky against the Caps that he got coincidental minors during that 5 min. major. He could have easily been the only one taken off the ice. What player whose team is trying to rally would try to start something physical on a 5 min. major? Oh yea!!! A player in a "funk". He needs to be benched and for longer than a game or two. And he has no business on the pp unit.
