You should mention Albany in your next blog Kowalsky is doing wonders with a team that's already had their 3 best players called up.

DeBoer went a little overboard when talking him up post-game.

He does this all the time with guys he likes. The way he talks about Gionta you think he was a perennial 30 goal scorer it's ridiculous. Gives so much credit for small things it's pretty crazy. Harold's a Norris candidate as well according to him. And on those 2nd lines stats i guess that's nice but this was against the islanders without JT...Not all the impressive when you think about it. We need to make a trade for a more skilled forward. Gio and Bernie are doing yeoman's work out there but it's not going to work. They are 4th liners with Bernie being capable of being a 3rd liner.

Matteau is so frustrating. He looked good all game, then he does what he always does and takes a stupid penalty for punching a guy in the face when his team is up 6-0 in the third. Doesn't seem to be learning how to control his temper.

Yeah, I'm still shocked there isn't more going on. A lot of players rumored to be on the block and a lot of teams that are looking to make a move but nothing getting done.

I think there are a lot of worse times to take a penalty. I didn't see it, but I would be more critical if it was a tight game.

I stopped watching the game but that's unfortunate. Part of me likes that aspect of him though. Just look at the CBJ game we could of used a guy to go stir some poop and punch Folglno in the face or guy hack there goalie. But yeah when your up by any margin let alone blowing the doors off em just let it go and be the bigger man.

True but the refs may also just let it go if it wasn't that ridiculous of a punch. Tight games they generally give a little more leeway. Less of chance the game ends up boiling over when both teams are still trying to win than in a one sided affair. Haven't seen it like you so can't say how bad of punch it was.

I just have a hard time getting mad at whatever someone does in a 6-0 game.

That's true and unless he like straight up assaults someone i wouldn't ever really either. I said in my other post I sort kind of like this aspect to his game. Some snarl is something we could use more of on our team right now. Part the reason we overpaid so much for Clowe to is because we really don't have a lot of it.

I agree that we need some snarl and this board seems to share that view, but gritty players like Matteau will take a good amount of penalties. Clarkson had 78 pims in 48 games last season and I'm not sure if he fought once. It seems Matteau gets a lot of unnecessary flak from Devils fans. Even Tom Wilson who was hailed as the next Lucic doesn't have better numbers than him and he also takes a lot of penalties. Not saying one's going to be better than the other, but fans are really hard on the kid.

Part of it is from his rep in the Q. They say he's a loose cannon who is more trouble than he's worth.

Part of it is from the dirty, Kaleta-esque plays he has on YouTube.

Part of it isn't his fault, its just the fact that he was drafted at all instead forfeiting the pick. A lot of people are, perhaps unfairly, expecting too much from him.

I think it's mostly that last one. I agree with both of you he get's treated unfairly by many devils fans. I think at the very least he will be a solid 3rd liner like the role he has now for team USA.

Random thought as I'm watching the replay of the game:

I really like Fayne on our team. I know he gets caught making a clumsy play occasionally but unless we're offered something we can't say no to, I hope we don't trade him away. He's just a solid guy to round out the D group.

The first two are basically par for the course with agitators. You look up hits for guys like Shaw and Marchand while they were in junior and you can find some Kaletaesque ones, but both have already been big parts of a stanley cup. I just think some fans have made up their mind on him.

While I agree, we need to start moving bodies out. He should be one of the easier ones to move and might be able to get us something back aside from conditional picks.
