Julie Robenhymer: USA Adds Three to Preliminary Roster + WJC Questions Answered + Sweet Goal
- jules

This is an Olympic question but why has Andy Greene not been even considered ? I mean look at his numbers and minutes played and toughness of competition. Todd has been shocked he hasn't even been invited for them to play even at the world cup level. I am sure at least one other person has likely asked this but what is your take on it and I know there are lots of good players to choose from but why not even an invite when they invited Jones and Trouba ?

Q: After last year's success, the U.S. will have to do without three of their top players this year (Trouba, Jones and Galchenyuk). Do you feel that the team have enough fire power to be a contender even without these stars? If so, why?

I think you're missing maybe the biggest (and smallest) player rom last year; Johnny Gaudreau. He was a 1sr team all star last WJC and correct me if I'm wrong but had the most goals in the tourney as well.

This question focuses on the players that are still eligible to participate by age, but unavailable because of their NHL status. While I agree that Team USA would be better with Gaudreau as well, he's 20 and not eligible to play.

Don't understand how Cole Cassels isn't on that roster.

Two things here....

1) He played for Team USA at the World Championship in Germany in 2010
2) In tournaments like this, defensemen usually have to be defensively responsible but also contribute offensively and run the transition game. There are VERY few spots for true BAMFs and if I'm taking a BAMF, I'm taking Jack Johnson over Greene.

Not sure what a BAMF is but tell me Jack is at least the better Johnson cause the other one is horrible. I just don't get it he is as mobile as just about any guy there and has 14 points this season plus 2 one a team that is right now out of a play off spot and a goal differential of -8 and only has 12 pims while being on or top ranked or 2nd in the league pk can't remember which it is. He is out there almost everytime we are short handed. I mean he should at least get a chance to battle these guys for spots . Even the TSN panel was shocked how little known this guy is for someone who plays up to 27 minutes a night and against the other teams top players.

You are not the only one....BUT, he holds dual citizenship with USA and Canada and played for Canada (Team Ontario) for the WHC U-17. It's an event organized by Hockey Canada and not the IIHF so he's not locked into that decision, but it designed as a feeder system for Hockey Canada to identify talent for future National Junior Teams and while he couldn't have played for Team USA in that tournament anyway because they use the NTDP U17 team, it is entirely possible that he doesn't want to play for Team USA just like Jamie Oleksiak chose to play for Canada.

Plus, it's one thing to be invited to evaluation camp without any prior experience with USA Hockey but it's practically unheard of to go to the actual tournament without any USA Hockey experience. He's only 18, so we'll see what happens next year!!

I consider Jack to be a better defenseman than Erik and I don't disagree with your assessment of Greene and he does fit in with those being considered - Byfuglien, Shattenkirk, McDonagh, Fowler, Yandle, Suter, Faulk, etc - so who knows....maybe he'll be the big surprise come January 1!

I was going to say I looked that up and everything that came up for it had very little to do with hockey lol but I like that. I wouldn't be devastated just thought it was weird he always seemed to go by so quietly. I guess It's a good thing for us if people aren't taking notice. To me he is a very complete player. Might not be the pp qb but can chip in quite nicely on the offenseive is a very intelligent player and moves very well and is always in position. He doesn't make 6 million like some of these others guys but he is in the category where you can argue him being good enough. Another big thing I think he has is consistency he is a rock back there every game and rarely has a bad game. Like I said though it won't be a crime there are lots of very good players to choose from and I will be cheering for Canada so if not taking him means they take a player who might not play as well I am happy

No offense, because I would take Green in a heartbeat especially on the Isles, but

I don't think he's remotely close to the level of
Byf, Shat, Suter, Yandle, etc

Also Trouba and Jones are brought in to give them a "taste", this was announced a while back

If Injuries happen I'm sure Green would be called up before those rookies

Buf is over rated and exactly what I wouldn't want on the big ice surface. Buf can be great and he can be poop he is to inconsistent and slow. I won't complain though as I am Canadian and I don't really see how Shat is better then him. He might be younger and the flashier name but I don't think there is anything else backing up that he is better the Greene. He at least is mobile unlike like Buf. To me the only guy who I would say should be a lock is Suter the rest of them are number 2's and 3's. I won't care if Greene doesn't get the call it's just weird how little credit the guy gets for a player who plays 23-27 minutes a night and if we have 6 penalty minutes he is out there for 5 of them on our number 2 ranked pk. He is consistent, mobile, defensively aware and can chip in offensively. Buff is a big shot and 275 lbs of meat that is going to have a very rough tournament, I could be wrong but to me Yandle is all offense and everyone else in the conversation should be at least debatable.
