There is a lot more uncertainty around Mackinnon's contribution in the upcoming years than around Subban's. You mention it yourself, drafting Jones was too much of a risk because you never know how d-men will mature. Well, now that MTL has one that matured into a great d-man, why on Earth would they trade him.
Would PHO trade OEL for Monahan? Would OTT trade Karlsson for Hertl? You don't trade relatively established superstar d-men for first-year, full of potential (and more common) rookie forwards! |

If it is straight up, Montreal should jump all over this. While Subban is an amazing player (I've jumped on the bandwagon), MacKinnon is going to be such an amazing player that the slight loss in current talent more than makes up for it for Montreal. Add the fact that Subban will command 7-8M on a long term deal versus Mackinnon's entry level deal then bridge deal I believe makes this an easy win for Montreal.
I think that this would be a bad deal for Colorado though. As good as Subban is you don't give up your 1st overall pick for one player, especially when they could have picked Jones or traded down got more assets and picked Jones. |
