@DarrenDreger, Vanek was offered to the Leafs... but given cap restraints, I imagine, wasn't happening.

WOOOOOO!!!! Get that guy the hell out of here now please.. He is not worth anywhere close to this much and would benefit the leafs more if he brought back a 1st in a trade.

His offensive contributions aren't why he's needed. I don't want to get into an argument about why he's so important to the team though. Those tend to go nowhere.

Agreed on the first part, but he makes 6.5 now and given that he's the team captain and eats up the most and the hardest D minutes, I doubt he'd want to take a pay cut. I predict 6.5 to 6.75 over 5 to 7 years.

I wouldn't mind Phaneuf back at $6mil. $7mil is probably what he's gonna get in open market.... In other news. Apparently Buffalo tried to trade Vanek to leafs first but were turned down. They even offered to retain some salary.

They must have been asking a lot. If Moulson is what they wanted from NYI they were probably asking for Kadri from Toronto.

Hopefully this is just the starting point and they can get him down to 6 or 6.5 but I donno if that's possible.

Unfortunately, he knows what's probably out there. That's 7.5 on the max deal from Edmonton most likely.

I agree. We dont need him to contribute so much offensively as we do defenseively. And Carlyle is turning Dion into a shutdown machine. I think the only way people realize this is if (please dont happen) Dion got hurt for a few games. We would be screwed and I think we would be lucky to win a game in his absence. I dont know how people can say he isnt worth 7, yet on the open market he would get that easy. Are all the GMs dumber than the phaneuf hating hockeybuzz posters? They seem to think he is worth it.

If he wants $50million, then give it to him. But lower the cap hit, and do it over the max 8 years. With the deep pockets MLSE has, buy him out when he's 34-35-36 if his game has gone in the tank
