Of all the bad penalties that the Flyers have taken in the last few games, the Coburn penalty cost them on the scoreboard, but it was at least part of a hockey play. Coburn should have better control of this stick but he didn't swing it like a baseball bat. The end result was still a goal against.

Overall, this philosophy of "we will be the toughest" really goes back to Snider. He pulled the plug on the speed kills experiment of Russ Farwell when he brought back Bob Clarke to be the GM. This is the philosophy that leads to so many of the deplorable drafts and trades.

Just saying

Discipline is lacking, for sure.

don't talk to me about undisciplined hockey . Panik cost us the game against Pittsburgh with a tremendously stupid penalty with :56 left in the game tied 4-4

Hey Tim,
I think that Chief will be the kick in the butt that this team needs. I know that tough coaches tend to lead a short shelf life, but I really think the team lacks motivation, and discipline. When G says that he lacks confidence, I really question his work ethic. If I had an 8 year, millions of reasons contract, I would be happy, and playing my butt off every night. I love the Flyers, and it pains me to see what they are going through. But, to pout, and suck on your thumb is really bad. That is why I question G as being a captain. All the GREAT players seem to make those around them play better. However, people keep saying that the Flyers need to surround G with better players. What is your take on G's attitude, and if he's lost his mojo? I like G, and how he owns Crosby, but if you can only get excited about playing the Pens, then why are you getting all that money, and leading a team?
Just my thoughts. Thanks.

This is exactly what I have been hearing, Tim, from many of the scouts I have talked to during the first three Flyer homes games as well. Chief recognizes it too and I'm sure is hard at work to change the team's ingrained behavior. (I can't think of a better person to get that message through to them either.) After this week's home games with Vancouver on Tuesday and Pittsburgh on Thursday he will have a full uninterrupted week before the next game to work on this problem (and perhaps to even figuratively "spank" some of his more egregious miscreants). The one "saving grace" so far is that the three teams in the Metropolitan Division immediately ahead of them -- the Devs, Rangers, and Caps -- are in equal early funks with just two wins among them in their 16 games so far and are underwater by 33 goals (33-66). That "hiatus" is not likely to last, however, so the time to fix the Flyers' discipline issue has got to be now.

Bingo. Time and time again, there's only one common denominator: Dinosaur Ed.

Tim,

Please stop covering the Flyers.

Thanks,

The thing of it is, they are not "goonish" type penalties.

They are the lazy, I got caught out of position and didn't keep my feet moving so I had to grab, hold, hook the guy because of it, type penalties.

This is not your 70's Flyers. They were fighting, cross checking, beating the crap out of your opponent penalties.

This team is nothing like those teams.

Guess the Laviolette firing might have been a bit premature...

That's fine, just wonder why they didn't do it in the off season. Wasted a lot of time by waiting til they were 3 games in. JMO.

The team just sucks..period..the faster your owner realizes that, fires your lame ass GM, and gets someone in there that knows what they are doing..nothing is going to change..There is no chemistry, they don't gel well, and there seems to be no appetite to win..hence all these penalties that cosy you games..Looks and reminds me very much of the Rangers who look good on paper but just cant get it done year after year..Trading Carter and Richards was the dumbest thing he did..and jvr for schenn..get Holmgren out now!

the actual value received for carter/Richie was good, but how the team was constructed made little sense. the jvr trade was horrid becaus there was a less than adequate value in return & e it included letting carle go to roll the dice on Weber...total fail. homer has run his course... knee jerk nonsense has to stop.
