You would never see that kind of thing on a baseball diamond. I’m pretty sure there have been about 10 baseball punches landed over the last two decades, and Nolan Ryan landed six of them. Baseball has been neutered by a lack of celebration and outward emotion. How often do you see a baseball player care enough about the team to put himself in physical danger? About as often as you see overt happiness, which is usually limited to the moments after the final out of the World Series.
Very little contact in Baseball, I wouldn't expect it either. I sooner see a brawl in a Snooker game. |

Fighting is and should be a part of hockey...period!!! - whipper334

So a mask with a cage that has a chin guard? Like we used when we were younger? |

Only 30 guys, but 60% of them want the instigator abolished. - Lahey
Legally I don't think they can get rid of it, but I was always under the impression that it wasn't a majority wanting it abolished. More undecided and no. |

Honestly if they really cared about concussions then yes that's what you would do.
Prevents any stick from doing damage to the face. Any puck, elbow or other foreign object. Would also allow them to develop a helmet that would drastically cut concussions.
But then again they won't mandate the concussion preventing helmets that exist already, so really who the (frank) am I kidding. |

Good point. They never seem to want to mandate anything in the NHL even simple things like the Kevlar socks that will help cut down on dangerous cuts ie. karlsson or even the visors be mandated. |

Ok, interesting. However, the fact is, with more concussion issues coming to be known and the start of the law suits, we've already begun the inevitable slide downhill to the abolishment of fighting in team sports, but especially hockey. Sure, we all love to see it for the reasons you've set out, but there are personal & legal consequences.
So, in most Rec leagues & especially Oldtimers (those over 35), fighting is banned. First offence in Oldtimers is a 1 year suspension in most places. Sure, at times tempers flair, harsh words are spoken and there's a shove or two, but that year-long ban is really effective.
The die is cast. It won't happen for years yet, but it will happen. Like it or not, fighting will be banned from hockey. |

It's a legal thing. Someone was on Gregor's show talking about it and it comes down to if the NHL mandate a particular piece of equipment and then someone gets killed with that piece of equipment then the NHL is screwed.
It's apparently a very fine line. |
