Canes web guy today reported Gerbe/JStaal/Dwyer for practice today. I am not sure what happens when Ruutu returns, but as good as that line has looked the past couple preseason games, I would be very surprised if Muller broke it up especially with all of the other moving parts.

I think the overriding, most important thing for this team in terms of making the playoffs, is staying healthy. Obviously you'd love for this to be a video game and just turn "injuries off" but that's not realistic. If both of the goalies stay healthy and enough of the top 8 defenders (including Bellemore and Murphy when needed) this team might have a shot.

Also a skinner-lindholm-ruutu third line doesn't sound too bad at all in my opinion if everyone gets healthy. Guess we'll have to see.

Are you going to opening night this friday? I know i am!

Great reading as always!

Any chance Skinner plays his way onto the top line again.

Literally zero chance barring injury. But no matter how good he play, they wont.

First, I am surprised no one surprised me for making too many things important to making the playoffs.

When you sort out my yammering, I think the biggest thing is that the team needs to be better defensively. Defense is the way to grind out points when you don't play the greatest, are battling injuries or just are not in a groove for a week or so. I think it starts with Ward being amongst the best in net, add Jordan Staal getting back to being an elite checking line center like he was in Pittsburgh and then just be sounder (not spectacular, just give the goalie a chance) on the blue line. Now you have a recipe to get to 2-2 for at least an OTL point on a tough night or even win in OT or late in regulation on 1 good play or a break.

As to your line, if Gerbe/JStaal/Dwyer continues to play well, I think it could be the path to a balanced offense. Ruutu would be a good complement to a Skinner/Lindholm or possibly Skinner/Nash combination on a 3rd line. He would make them a little bigger, is pretty good defensively and most importantly despite being a power forward could skate with them. And with that, you can leave JStaal's line focused on slowing down the other team's best and make up the scoring deficiency if needed from a 3rd line with some scoring punch.

Matt,

In terms to Pitkanen going on LTIR, (which I would assume happens today). Not knowing the exact amount of room we would gain (because I believe you need to be up to/or over the cap to get the full cap hit in relief). Regardless, lets say the canes get around to or just over $4M in cap relief, what do you think JR will do? Again, I haven't read anything about an internal budget this year, but with past years one should assume that the '13-'14 Canes are running under an internal budget. Do you see them holding off and carrying the space through the beginning of the season to potentially make a move? Also, I think you pointed out recently, that the Dalpe/Welsh trade shed cap and salary? Capgeek is showing us with $535k in cap space with a projected $63,765,000 in payroll. What are your thoughts?

So as I understand the LTIR game to work it goes like this:
1) You want to be right up to but not over the cap first.
2) Then you place player on LTIR.
3) When you do it this way you get to spend up to their full cap hit amount on "replacement" player(s).

You cannot save it and for example get an $8M player for only the last couple months. You can only get a player or players up to the salary (so $4.5M in Pitkanen's case).

My wild guess is that the near-term goes like this:
1) Joni goes on LTIR which sets off a domino reaction that sees Dvorak signed, Murphy recalled from Charlotte and probably Corrente sent to Charlotte (unless Gleason goes on IR in which case maybe Corrente stays).

2) That becomes your opening day lineup.

3) JR does not go make a big or even medium trade at this time but instead decides to let the dust settle a bit and see if he can figure where even he needs help after seeing a few real games, ideally with a real lineup.

4) Unless he looks real good and comfortable in the first handful of games, Lindholm heads to Charlotte (probably short-term) to get up to speed.

5) Things get reassessed in about 2 weeks after some real games, hopefully some clarity on the nagging injuries and probably a trial run in real games for Murphy and Lindholm. Then somewhere between mid-Oct and mid-Nov you might see JR make a move if things are not going well and there are clear problems.

The wild card could be if a decent bottom 6 forward or 2 float across waivers in which case JR might make a low-risk/low-cost addition sooner rather than later.

Disclaimer: There are certain times where I feel like I have a pretty good pulse on what the team might be thinking. Now is not one of them. There are just too many things swirling around with the LTIR funny math maneuvering, rookies who could go a couple directions and the batch of injuries that mess up the lineup.

Thanks for the reply! Actually, I don't think you are too far off. I think JR will stay patient for the time being and act only if needed. I would think that the additions (if or when) they happen will be depth related.

Matt, i'm assuming that you also think Dvorak will be signed (if i understood you correctly), and i'm thinking the 3rd line will be Nash - Skinner - Bowman/ Dvorak and the 4th line will have Sutter - Westgarth - Bowman/ Dvorak
Lindholm in Charlotte! If Lindholm stays i don't know which line/ position he plays???
Also, if Lindholm goes to Char. i wouldn't be surprised to see another FA F signed, reasonably soon, for the 4th line! What's your take on that?
