I for one think a greater emphasis should be placed on protecting the John Scott's of the league.
What Scott did was absolutely justified after Devane attacked Tropp. It's goons like Kessel we need to get out of the league. His digusting amount of PIMs every year makes me sick.

Give me a break buddy........Kessel had a 6'8" behemoth, who is paid to fight, coming after him. His first reaction, in shock, is to chop at his leg and slow him down, to get away! That first chop hit him in the shin pad! Don't know if you have ever played hockey, but I'm sure the guy didnt even feel it. The second swing didnt even hit him and the "spear" was more like a poke.
So instead of criticizing what Kessel did, lets hear what you would have done, in the blink of an eye when a gorilla jumps at you wanting to pummel you. |

Stop being stupid kiddo. Most teams would like to have a talent like Kessel. But doesnt mean he should be allowed to do what he is doing. - poisondhearts37
So would it have been ok if Scott sucker punched the Leafs best player knocking him with a broken jaw or worse he becomes another Steve Moore? Kessel is not a fighter. Scott should have been smarter & gone after one of the Leafs tough guys. Scott broke the players code. Should Colton Orr start punching Jeff Carter? No. |

How dare you speak of John Scott like that.. He's the reincarnate of Scott Niedermayer. 2 point NHL season here he comes! |

AGREED. It's first instinct when u get attacked. When I was like 12, in 2 different incidents I was attacked by a person. & I knocked both people down with out even remembering that I hit them. That's called instinct. |

Good points, but others had already jumped to Kessel's defense by the second slash and Scott was tied up by a linesman for the spear. Not defending Scott at all either. If anything Clarkson was the one that got screwed over. |

When playing at home, John Scott should be treated like Johnny Carson. When he comes on the ice, the arena annoucer should say HERRRRREEEEE'S JOHNNNY!!!!
With Carson's entry music playing. On the Johnny Scott show tonight, we have a great show. Tonight Johnny picks a fight with Steven Stamkos. HAYOOOOO!!!!!!
Later on in the show Johnny will sucker punch Martin St. Louis HAYOOOOOO!!!!!!
Watch out Jude Drouin, Johnny is lining up beside u HAYOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! |

Was all Scott's fault, he STARTED the whole mess. Ok Clarkson should not have jumped over the boards, but how Scott gets away with zero word from Shanny after starting this? That's the most surprising. Kessel only got 3 pre-season games cause A) He's a 1st time offender & B) It was instinct to defend himself. However yes, next time Shanny will be a little more harder on Kessel if he's a re-offender. |

Leafs didnt put out a tough guy. Scott told Kessel he was gonna push him around. Kessel didnt have to line up. He could of done a number of things to get out of that scenario. Saying should Orr just start punching Jeff Carter has nothing to do with what happened in Toronto. The first hack is one thing. But the 2nd and the spear while Scott is tied up with someone. Come on man. Sure the spear wasnt hard or anything. But still. He cant just be doing that stuff. |

Because he did nothing wrong. There is no rule against fighting. He got an instigator. Sure they dont usually got after the Kessels of the league. That would also be Kessels 3rd time doing it in less than a week. |

Which is unfortunate with the automatic 10 games because I thought Clarkson did the honorable thing. And I for one would have no problem with supplementary discipline for Scott either, especially if the league wants to give more than lip service to "protecting its star players". |

Got to disagree here, Scott broke the code big time. Instigated on a much smaller, non-fighting player. Really there's plenty of blame to go around. I have to wonder if this puts a target squarely on the back of someone like Vanek, undeserved as it is. |

I would tend to agree the slash was worse, but thing about the spear that bothered me was that Scott's arms were held. Just not good all the way around, Scott too.
On a better note, how about that Bernier??? First time ever I'll be pulling for the Leafs a little bit. - cryptical77
I think Bernier is going to be a big upgrade, stick handling alone will make sure he's #1 this year. IMHO |

AGREED 100%. The #1 job will have to be earned, but in the long run, no doubt Bernier will eventually win the #1 job. No Leaf fan can claim unfairness cause Bernier will win the #1 job & he'll have earned it. |

If Kessel's use of the stick warrants further suspension then almost certainly my use of the stick should land me in jail |

Scott was relatively unpunished since he did no damage to Kessel. Had he succeeded in doing so, the punishment would have been severe. The Bertuzzi/Moore incident is an example of what can possibly go wrong.
Rolston received a heavy fine, and a stern warning behind closed doors. This warning was repeated to all coaches throughout the league. Basically, they were told that the next one that sends out a goon to go after a star player would receive a harsh penalty. Unlike the players, they have no CBA to protect them. |

Exactly. It was disgusting to me because of this. Same with the second slash. Already tied up, no need at all, nothing scott could do. As far as being against the Leafs...I have no feelings about them, only callin it as I see it. |
