I agree with you completely regarding Butler. He's being passed on the depth charts... Russell, Sieloff, and Wotherspoon have all looked better than him so far. I think it's time to cut ties.

I'm a little surprised that Street still seems to be in the mix. He's been fine, but not a standout in my opinion.

I also wish they would put Monahan on the 2nd line for this game, see if can keep up.

Yeah I had the exact same reaction when I saw Street in the lineup...almost forgot about the guy to be honest. He wont be around for much longer once Cammy and Hudler return. Its Knight that Im wondering about...can he earn a 4th line role? Should he earn a 4th line role?

Yeah he's been a little bit of a let down for sure. Maybe some time in Abbotsford would be good for him.

I see the roster going into the regular season like this, Street is definately a filler for Cammi, and I agree that Wotherspoon and Sieloff should be in for Butler.

Glencross – Stajan – Stempniak
Baertschi – Backlund – Street (Cammi)
Jones – Monahan – Knight (Hudler)
Bouma – Galiardi – Jackman
Others in the mix: Horak, Mggratton.

Brodie – Giordano
Wideman – Russell
Butler (?) – O”Brien

Lines have changed as of this morning's skate.

Lines are:

Glencross-Monahan-Stemp (Giving the kid a chance!)
Backlund- Girardi- D Jones (Giving Girardi another try at center I guess?)
Baertschi-Stajan- Street
Bouma- Knight -Jackman (I hope Knight can make the team, but 4th line isn't for him)

D-man

Brodie-Gio
Russel-Wideman (Wideman has been VERY good thus far)
O'Brien- Butler (I hope this is Butler's last game....he is a complete Pylon)

Berra get's the star with McDonald backing it up.

Ryan Jones on waivers. He cojld be a decent pick up. I've always liked his game; a Glenx in the making. He needs a little more recovery time from his eye injury tbough.

I agree with Colin that MacDonald will get the back-up job but Berra will be up way sooner then most think. I could see the flames doing what they did 2 years ago when it was the back-up's turn to play. They would fly Irving in and have the regular back-up Karlson sent to the pressbox. Not saying MacDonald will not get any starts but less then people would think.

Interesting thoughts about Butler and i hope you are right. The only kink i see in your theory is that Seiloff, Wotherspoon , Ramage ect. would make the team instead of him. The flames have not played any of the 3 youngsters in the last 2 pre-season games. Have to think they would like to see how they handle themselves against other teams almost NHL line-ups, as opposed to just watching them play split squad teams.

I hope you are right that Liles goes to the Av's. I got a feeling its between them and the flames and i don't like his contract, nor do i think they would give up a good pick to take Liles off their hands.

Better players, yes. Better in that role? I don't think so. If Jones is playing with an edge he's a very effective 4th line agitator. Knight doesn't seem to have that in his game.

Cheers ...only problem is that Girardi is a defenseman, and for the Rangers.

I don't think Hartley ever forgave what happened between him and Jones last year. Jones seemed to have a lot of spunk in the split squad pres-sason games, but once those were over i don't think he has played.

Hartley says Backlund is on the wing just to test out the other guys and still have him in the lineup, nothing more than that.

Btw...from the poll I put up yesterday, over 1000 people felt that the Flames should grab Liles...Im sure many were Leafs fans but still...are you guys still that much against it if it means grabbing a prospect too? What about a guy like Percy for instance?

D Smith for Liles and Percy.

I'd prefer a forward prospect over a D-prospect. The D prospect's for the heat are already extremely crowded. But I like the train of thought here.

Maybe D.Smith+ 5-6th round pick for Liles and Colborne?

I know Colborn has struggled in his development....but he'd have to clear waivers first, so may make this pointless for the Flames as I'm sure he'd get picked up on waivers....

I don't like the message that would send to Sieloff, Wotherspoon, Ramage, Kanzig, etc. If Flames are rebuilding and have said the youth will have a shot, you don't then go out and bring in a vet d-man.

We all agree Smith and Butler should be waved, and that is so we can see Flames prospects play, not to fill the void with vets.

I agree you don't want to send the kids the wrong message, but to not make moves when you have the roster space and an asset can come back to you for virtually nothing, you can't just sit back and not do anything.

There is nothing against sitting JML if he isn't playing well. The Flames could get him for almost nothing along with an asset and see about turning JML in to either an asset at the trade deadline or off season, and if not, then they still have their 2 compliance buy outs they can use.
