Regarding Poulin...
I feel like he has issues with any form of traffic. From what I remember, anytime a shot comes from above to circles and 1 or more player are infront of him it finds its way in.
Maybe its bad luck, maybe its bad trying to see through the traffic, but this is something he will definitely have to adapt to, to become an NHL goalie. |

So we have one faction that states he allows a lot of rebound goals, and another who states it's long distance shots. I'm wondering if it's more subconscious revisionism or DiPietronitis
DiPietronitis (De -Pee-Etro-Nit-us)- n 1. Criticizing goaltenders due to perceived flaws similar to Rick DiPietro as a result of DPTSD (DiPietro Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
That said, your comment is consistent with those who feel Poulin's positioning isn't sound and he needs to challenge the shooter more. Hopefully that comes with more game action/confidence. I don't recall him consistently having trouble with traffic but I suppose I'll pay more attention to that now...

He was once called by Patrick Roy the best prospect he has seen in years. He was doing very well the season he got hurt... never know. I am always skeptical.. but also very hopeful. His NHL stats are not that different from Bernier on a much worse team. |

I want the Isles to give Strome atleast a look on JT's wing in preseason...
I feel that they are now being overcautious with their prospects.. |

Agreed because I think the signing of Bouchard is going to be a waste of money because he is always hurt... |

As crazy as it sounds, they'll probably get a better idea where his game is right now playing without JT. JT could make any of us look like we're ready to play in the NHL. Plus these coaches want to make sure the kids can play an all around effective game its just not about putting points on the board. |

if we were still a potential top 5 draft picking team I'd have no problem throwing Poulin into the net for 30 games and let him sink or swim. At this stage of the development though, we need this team to continue moving forward. It's a big risk to play an unproven guy at a crucial position and not have an alternative available if he struggles. Too big a risk of hurting the team and missing the playoffs.
He's got another couple preseason starts likely, and then the heat will be on him as well as Nabby. If either is struggling in the first 10 games we're going to need help from outside to step in. Can't just sit and be patient at this point, there is too much on the line.
I'd love to see him succeed, but if he doesn't show that he can play and doesn't look good early, it might be time to send him to the AHL and sign a ufa backup.

It was. I agree with everything he said. We cant risk missing the playoffs because of terrible goaltending. We finally have the pieces to be a playoff team year after year, it would suck to miss out because of crappy goaltending. |

Isn't that what Poulin says about most of the shots that make it behind him?
(He had three in preseason game #1) |

I for one cannot believe how far he's fallen. His form and confidence just looks completely changed since his freak injury 2 seasons ago. What happened? |

and that or our defense OR combination(most likely if we do miss)of the two WILL be the reason why. It was my one huge knock on the offseason moves/non moves by Snow. We all know the rumored offers for Schneider and Bernier but I for one believe it should've been more of a "gone for broke" effort to get a decent goaltender in here. Of course I mean "gone for broke" within reason. |

I'm not saying I agree or disagree, just that I think the team will demonstrate a lot more patience than 10 games. I think Poulin and Nilsson are viewed as 1 and 1A candidates so if Poulin does fail miserably early, it's not out of the question that Nilsson would soon get a chance. That said, we learned the hard way that Nabby wasn't up to snuff when the playoffs hit last year, so I suppose my concern is more about him as our starter than either Poulin or Nilsson as our backup. Now if we're hoping that one of those two will step up and become our number 1 guy by seasons end, I agree completely with what you say.
Overall I think Garth's eyes are set beyond this season. This is another year where the team will try to take a few extra strides and hope to go two to three rounds deep. By next year they'll consider it 'win now' time and we'll likely see an ultimate decision made at the goaltending position. The problem is, Poulin is not going to complete his game in the first 7-10 games. He'd likely only start 2-3 of them at best.
If I were Snow, I'd probably try to start them out at a 70/30 split and then slowly incorporate Poulin towards a 50/50. If he fails to show he's keeping up by December, he should be replaced by Nilsson. If they both fail, everything will fall on Nabby. At that point the season is likely lost. If we're on the fringe of the playoffs and struggling at goaltender, they can then weigh the options of a trade, but I wouldn't expect outside help in 2013-14.

I agree he has the pieces, not sure what held him back. Does he have that much confidence in Poulin? I just don't see it. |
