102 games.....that's all it takes in this day and age to get a contract like that?

Hall and Eberle only played 120ish and 140ish respectively and produced at the same offensive pace as Nuge and yet their contracts weren't nearly as controversial. RNH also developed a strong defensive acumen in his sophomore season so he arguably brings more to table than Eberle.
Obviously there are risks involved with this contract, but the reward heavily outweighs any such risk in my mind. |

Ryan Garner: Done Deal: Nugent-Hopkins Inks Seven-Year Extension - Ryan Garner
While I agree with the comparisons to some other guys in the league, Katz is just pissing money down the drain and paying these guys earlier than he has to.
Pros:
1) Yak is capped at $6m next off season .. the table is set for this to happen and we wont have to overpay.
2) In a couple of years when the cap goes back up and RNH (hopefully) turns into the player he should, this and the other $6m contracts will look like a steal.
Cons:
1) He has yet to play a full season, only 100games or so in total
2) He is little and needs to fill out so he doesn't get hurt so frequently

A very talented young player, he'll be a great #1 center for the Oilers. |

Just a small error, but Smyth played with Hall and Hemsky for the majority of the night last night while Eberle played with Gordon and Perron. As usual, though, I enjoyed the read! - MaximumBone
Good call. Both of those lines were really humming, and liked what I saw from Perron as well. Sets up a lot of interchangeable options for the team when everyone's healthy. |

Joensuu looked terrific last night, as did Smyth, it was nice to see. Marincin while being a part of two goals is a complete disaster in our own end. His head being lodged in his own ass was the reason the Canucks scored their only goal; he has a real long way to go yet. |

um... what?
Eberle scored 34 goals his 2nd year, Hall 27 (in 61 gp) and Hall had 22 in 65 gp as a rookie.
RNH scored 4 goals last year. sure he had a pile of assists as a rookie, but let's not pretend RNH is the reason Eberle scored 34...
He may very well earn this contract, but he certainly hasn't yet |

He has also proved that he is a health risk within that extremely small sample size, lord knows the kid has talent, and will undoubtedly be a point per game player. If he is unable to bulk up and stay healthy then that 6 mill, 7 year contract could indeed hurt the franchise if he's only able to play 50-60 games a season.
Time will tell, still don't understand why management didn't wait to see how he has recovered from this latest injury, the guys a RFA, its not like he was going anywhere at the end of this season. |
