Good to be back at the UC last night. Just a few notes from last night..
- they announced 21k as the attendance but it was more like 16k
- LOTS of Detroit fans
- Very sloppy first period by both teams
- first major penalty was very bad and is worthy of a suspension
-power play still sucks!

Well they already cut Mullane and some others and sent Fournier back to juniors....
I suspect all these preseason games are going to be sloppy. I checked out a period + of Blue Jackets - Sabres and that was sloppy too. All the games are.
Will be interested to see how long Q sticks with Saad at C. And if he tries ANYTHING new on the power play. He's already got " Well, this is how we did it last year and it worked out pretty well....." as a response ready for the media so it's not like he has to do anything. But a different formation and a different #1 QB would be a nice start. |

John Jaeckel: Hawks Beat Wings, Lose Faceoffs - John Jaeckel
These types of incidents remain a problem in hockey that only league discipline can address.
Maybe relaxing the instigator rule when a player does this may be the way to go along with league discipline? Or for a real novel idea individual teams take it upon themselves and suspend their own players in addition any league suspension? |

You know I for one avocated just that for while....but now a days, if a player makes solid CLEAN contact on a opponent completely inside the rules, it seems like everyone on the ice who is a teammate of the guy who gets hit wants to go and beat the checker up.
To me that is even more ridiculous and part of the issue.
I just wonder (and this is gonna sound so prejudice) if many of the present smaller North americans and regular sized Euros are suddenly a whole lot more tentative and "thoughful" with their sticks and contact IF the guy they hit suddenly KNOWS he isn't getting an extra two for retaliation of dropping them?
There is no way I feel i am historian or scholar of the game, because since I have never disconnected for a season or so, i don't see the league adjustmenst style change unless I happen to go back in time and see a vid right after watching a now game...
But I am fairly certain the very fcat the NHL now has NBC making sure every playoff game is on plus lots of regular season games, they "seem" to be selling:
1. The artistry of the superb scorers whether they are point leaders or not
2. The roughness of play, and how the players are able to handle it.
3. The hard violent contact that isn't too far outside the new rules, and
4. The clear advancement of the speed and puck handling ability that is clearly superior to all the past eras.
5. and I might add the way fighting is now at a controlled theme/ timed place in the game, over how it used to be an instantaeous response to true dirty work form the other side.
The sell all those parts and the audience is watching and not switching channels.
But...the side issue is they can easily lose star players to concussions as JHawk59 said yesterday, inside the present "structure."

Thought Teravainen looked pretty good last night. Kid definitely has some great hands and vision. Saw him make typical rookie mistakes, but he had a few nice defensive take aways. Hopefully he keeps adding more strength and size to his frame. Looks like he could make a run at the 2nd line center sometime in the future. At least we can only hope.

But here's the problem. Today, we have guys milling about and swiping at eachother over CLEAN but big, hard hits.
How and when is it going to be appropriate to drop the instigator?
So now the players themselves would have to make the call pre-emptively as to whether the ref will call something dirty?
Seems like a slippery slope.

How about can't replace a suspended player - have to skate only 17 during a suspension.

Some video from last night including the cheap shot.

Thanks for posting Beav.
You know when I first saw Jonathan Ericsson, I was convinced he would always be a third pair guy, but he certainly has grown up quick, and his size showed in the tape, in the way Stanton backed off him.
And Crawford's new pads didn't stop him from looking pretty solid down low.

I understand the way you are looking at it as a viable punishment, but what if two of your dee-men get suspended?
I don't think the NHL would ever let that happen, and let's face it, the bottom clubs whoa re actually trying to find good tough skileld replacements on defense would be more likely to have these dumb mistakes to happen...

I would hope such a penalty would force the coaches to have more control over a player's on ice actions. |

You want to stop hits from behind and headshots? Fine a team $1M if a player on their team is guilty of those infractions. These hits would end the minute the rule was in place. |

I don't disagree with you JJ.
Just spitballing here, but what about just taking the instigator and pounding the crap out of some of these guys (COUGH Backes COUGH Torres COUGH)? Wouldn't that send a message to players around the league who like to take cheap shots at players? |
