First??? Oh poop! I missed the boat again.
Nice write up JJ. Do the Hawks plan on having Johns practice and possibly play some scrimmage games since he is right there?

How long do you think the Saad at center experiment will last?

Johns isn't signed. I don't think he can. I know they WANT him to sign, but he chose to go back to Notre Dame. He could Justin Schultz his way to another team if he wants. The hawks really like him and want to sign him so I don't think it will be an issue. But he's spurned them twice now.

As for scrimmaging, he can't. And Q already said they're 10 deep at D. with no mention of him....( or Dylan Olsen for that matter.)

Not aware of any. I will not be there but I will likely have some eyes and ears there and will pass along what I hear.

JJ,

Do you think there could be a possibility that the Hawks carry 8 defensemen?

In theory, Q could give minutes to Brookbank on the 4th line and carry Stanton or Kostka as the 7th defenseman.

Doubtful, unless a kid like Kostka could swing to 4th line W in a pinch

As per various sources on Twitter....Shaw is skating with Morin and Smith this morning, that could be an interesting 3rd line. Pirri is with Winchester and Shalunov while Toews is with Kane and Bickell (shocking).

Also, Cleary has signed a 1 year deal with the Red Wings.

And play 4 minutes. No thanks. Unless some of the kids totally crap the bed and can't win a spot, I say there are enough forwards to let the forwards be forwards and the D be D.

>Saad needs a new challenge after winning a Cup as a rook -- Q just trying to make him a better hockey player and keep Saad's head from swelling too large
>Saw several of Pirri's games when he was at RPI -- had great vision and was always doing the right things with the puck
>Shalunov never got out of "shuffle stride" mode at Prospects Camp -- perhaps he had an injury -- showed no top-end speed and lost every puck race -- but did protect the puck well when he had it
>Q will be watching to see who can play the game at a breakneck speed and also limit their mistakes

One year @ 1.75M. Even if DET sends down Tatar, that leaves them with 16 forwards and 1.7M over the cap.

A Sharp-Saad-Hossa line is actually pretty cool... If Sharp played center..... Which he won't....... Well, should be interesting all the same.

Based on what Q was saying Saad could be the centre on that line.

Do you think Hawks still look at Morrow/Larose/another vet for the bottom 2 lines? Read Brunner is talking to teams again. I don't see him fitting cap wise in Chicago but would look nice as a #2 center.

My Guess at opening night lineup based on current roster:

Bickell-Toews-Kane
Sharp-Pirri-Hossa
Saad-Kruger-Shaw
Winchester-Handzus-Morin
Smith<-13th forward

Keith-Seabrook
Oduya-Hjalmarsson
Leddy-Roszival
Brookstank <-7th Dman

At least for the first two minutes of game 1

There's that. What I really don't want to see is one of the Hogs end up spending time in the press box when they could be in Rockford playing valuable minutes. Really, I'd like to see a spot in the line-up that may work as a revolving door until one of the Hogs actually nails down that spot.

Except maybe Jimmy Hayes, I could see him being the 13th or 14th forward.

Not meaning to pick on you, but the idea that Kruger will center Shaw on 3rd line is not going to happen. As many worked to wrap their minds around what the Hawks were doing at the beginning of the short season last January, I for one clearly saw their strategy. And that is/was to roll 4 capable lines. Spreading the minutes allowed the team to overwhelm most team from an energy standpoint. Moreover, I pointed out last year, and look for it as a trend elsewhere this year. The most identifiable example to point to, was the US Junior team that won gold last year. That team did not load up a few lines. Rather, they rolled 4 balanced lines and created problems for all teams Each line had skill grit and defensively responsible players.

In my opinion, the Hawks will continue with this model, because
1 it worked
2 they still have the depth

And that is why Handzuis will be this years Jamal Mayers, by Christmas, barring major injury, he will spend most of the season in the press box.

Toews, Pirri/Saad, Shaw, Kruger look nice down the middle.

The fun will be filling out the wing pieces as JJ pointed out.
