In todays NHL it seems like positional players carry more value than goaltenders. |

Things is Buffalo has no real options right now, only playoff contender I see looking questionable in net is the Isles (that may eventually acquire one, I understand a team like Philly isn't exactly looking great, but they aren't getting another high priced goalie.)
Maybe the Avs, or Oilers, but I'm sure it would have to be at their price. Other than that maybe the Jets but Pavelecs contract has to go the other way too.
Buffalo doesn't really have a hand to play here. Centers are always in demand, goalies right now are pretty well set. |

they are both pending UFAs...they dont have much value with one year remaining coming off mediocre seasons. |

Miller does not have a lot of appeal for other teams right now.
It seems to me that the best fit for him is in Buffalo. He needs to show us a lot more this year than last year before anyone is likely to regard him as an elite goalie again.
He will have to sign a new contract well below his current one if he is not able to make the team and win the #3 goalie job for Team USA. So, my guess is he will put up his best effort in several years and Buffalo fans will be pleased he is still playing for the Sabres come Christmas. |

Again? Sorry...but Miller has never been an elite goalie. He has one year that could go as an argument to putting him in that status (09-10). Elite status should be reserved for at most the top 10%...in which Miller has never been.
NHL starter? Absolutely. Elite NHL goaltender...never in his life. |

I wouldn't say he is elite in fact I hate the word elite it gets thrown around way too much. The only elite goalies I have seen in my life (im almost 30) are Roy Hasek Broeder in the 90's. However http://www.quanthockey.co...easons-goalies-stats.html shows that he is in the top 10 out of 50 goalies in the last 7 years in save percentage which is a pretty telling statistic for goalies if you ask me. His even strength save percentage is even better (as are most goalies) but it ranks higher as well only .01 lower than Lundquist who most people see as the best goalie in the game (myself included).
What has kept him from being traded in my eyes are a few things. His contract $6 mil goalie with only one year left, his age 33 but he still has at least 3 good years left and Darcy. Darcy wants the world for him. This time him waiting didnt work out like it did for the Gaustad trade.
I still say Miller and a third (goes to a second if Stastny resigns or Buffalo makes the playoffs) for Statsny and a second (goes to a first if Miller resigns or Colordo makes the playoffs). I think that's a deal Colorado could live with and Darcy would feel he won. You may have to add a D prospect or roster player Sulzer McNabb etc and have Varlomov come back. |

Doubt it ever happens. If they deal Stastny it's probably for a D-man (if they are contending) or draft pick(s) (If they're out of it). I figure Miller will get dealt to a team with a long term goaltending injury....or Philly if Emery doesn't work out.

No team is going to give up a top 4 D for Statsny especially at the deadline. There aren't a lot of teams that could take on his salary either. Miller isn't going to Philly they can't afford him. I'm not saying it's going to happen but a deal with Buffalo and Colorado makes sense on paper. Buffalo has a ton of D as well.
That being said I could see Miller staying here all year and maybe even longer. Something like a 4 year $20 million extension. $5.5 in years one and two $4.5 years three and four could work.

He might not be in the top 3-5 in the NHL currently, but over the last decade he has been a top 5-10 goalie, with being maybe the best for a year or so.

I'll take that bet. I'm not saying they'll be getting Pietrangelo or anything but a #4 D is definitely possible. If you believe Miller gets Stastny than he's definitely worth a low end 2nd pair defensemen.
You can always take back salary or move other salary around. I wouldn't mind him signing an extension at a lower number but if the right deal is available I'd move him. |

As far as trade value goes, that's the only stat that matters. Here's to hoping he turns it around either to re-sign or to help increase trade value. |
