There is no chance he comes back if Lou is still GM. He'll have to wait for Lou to leave and even then I'd give it a real slim chance.

The devils were fine with him leaving due to the cap problems of him retiring at some point. If he comes back, it wont be on a cap-circumventing deal so no problem.

I think the better statement is;
Uncle Lou controls Kovy's fate.

Unfortunately I dont think Uncle Lou would be around if/when he decides to return so who knows! If the Devils business owneres look at it as a pure business, why wouldnt they welcome a marquee player back?

Wasn't his contract voided by this move to the KHL? If so why would the devls retain his rights?

As a long time, die hard Dev's fan, I find this hard to swallow. After all the trouble NJD went through to sign the guy (fined and losing a first round pick for circumventing the cap) and then he just leaves??? It speaks volumes about his integrity and charecter. I get wanting to be in your homeland, but he should have left before he f@#$ed the team over. I for one do not want to see him in the NHL again. He had his chance to play in the most competitve hockey league in the world and he slapped them in the face to serve his own selfish agenda.

Yeah, it's not happening. The circumstances on which he need to be reinstated almost guarantees that he's never coming back. No way he get's 30 unanimous votes to allow him back.

Pretty sure the comments on his return here are incomplete. All 30 teams have to approve IF he tries to return within one year of playing pro hockey. After sitting for one year, only the Devils have to approve and hold his rights IF he tries to return before turning 35. Once he turns 35, and has sat out a full year of pro hockey, he is a UFA. Which is exactly what a 3 year contract suggests to me he is planning on doing.

No, the league controls his fate. Kovi can only comeback iif the BOG has a vote on it. All 30 governors have to yes, which will not happen.

The guy walked away from his teammates, his GM his contract and us as fans and that was that, best of luck to you in Russia , he will never wear the Devils uniform again though he is a disgrace to the team and he is on the decline now anyways and hasn't been able to make it through a full season without injury in years usually right before playoffs that's not gonna get better in 5 years from now when he tries to come back.. At 40 Jagr last year put up better numbers than the superstar Kovalchuk even after splitting the season between two teams and of coarse not
Logging anywhere near the 30 something minutes a night and full 2
On the PP that Kovalchuk would get ..
I hope he never wins the cup personally. He gave up

There is no way that Kovy will ever wear a NJ Devils jersey again. The #17 is forever tainted and will not be accepted by the fan base. If he were to come back and the owners around the league approve of him, the Devils will trade him to another team for prospects or another veteran presence.

I would boo the (frank)ing poop out of this two face schemer. Thats why the wouldn't welcome him back. (frank) him and all his skill he (frank)ing quit on us and that is unforgivable. Point blank he burned the franchise, fans, and all his teammates when he retired. Better question is Why would we welcome him back? He never was the best player in the league for us even though he is more then capable of being that.

Before35 and after sitting out of pro hockey a year the devils only have to consent but do not retain his rights.

I'm not sure how long you have been following the Devils, but Lou is what people tend to refer to as "old school" and not one who deals with this type of behavior. When guys hold out Lou wait with them (a la Niedermayer and Arnott), when they are looking for the highest bid he lets them walk (Holik, Gomez, Martin, etc). Lou isn't one who stands for the type of behavior Kovy demonstrated. Everyone can say what they want about him wanting to go home, etc., but the bottom line is the guy signed a contract and didn't honor it.

Also I think most Devils fans would agree that the Kovy contract was a Vanderbeek signing, not a Lou signing. So there's that too...
