Why? He's well past his prime and won't be around by next year. |

Although Smyth commands more respect than Horcoff ever did, this would be repeating the same mistake as having Horcoff as captain.
I love Smytty, but no, very bad idea to give him the C. Unfortunately, I don't even think he should have an A...it's over, he just doesn't want to accept it (and good for him for putting up such a fight with father time). |

It gives a year for Hall to mature a bit more. He works his bag off, the only problem is how many games will he be in the press box this year. Its not a bad idea for a buffer between the next captain though. It would be nice if he could have the C in his final year. |

Never give the "C" to a man who could very well be scratched more often than not.
New rule I just made up.

As a farewell gift from the organization? Why not, it's only a year. I do understand that the next wave of Oilers are here and playing well. But as many of the Oilers hard core fans have said themselves they are just hoping to make the playoffs, so what could it hurt.

What if he ends up back in the press box again, pretty hard to lead from there. |

If he is going to sit in the press box that frequently then, I agree.
It's more of a nostalgia thing anyways. I remember him scoring and bleeding so much over the years...ah the memories
He was always a personal favourite.

Ryan Garner: Oilers Should Slap The C On Smytty - Ryan Garner
After reading.
You do make some great points as to why it could be a good idea.
Still I think there are too many cons. How many teams have their captains sit in the press box as I'm sure Smyth will be for at least a few games this year.
Smyth is a shell of his former self and I think the captaincy should be given to a player to lead the team not only in the room and on the ice but forward as a team.
Having said that IF they did name him captain I would feel better about it after having read this blog. |

I would say no give him the A unless you want him to groom the next Captain.
Just give it to Hall already and be done with it. |

With the lack of bottom 6 depth he shouldn't get too many scratches, but I'm guessing at least 3-6 games "maintenance days" |

I like AF, but you guys have a team full of young bucks. With AF being new to the team and a little older I think an A would be a good fit. For the most part I believe you guys should be going with one of the young studs...and Hall does appear to be a good fit.
These are just observations from a fan of the game. I don't follow the Oil enough to know what players are the true leaders of the team. |
